President John Dramani Mahama yesterday inaugurated the Eastern Corridor Fibre Optic Backbone Infrastructure Project at Ho in the Volta Region.
The project, funded by the Government of Denmark at a cost of USD38 million, is designed and implemented by Alcatel-Lucen, a leader in the field of networking and communications technology, products and service. It has a data centre and a managed service component to ensure the security of data on the entire network.
The project spans 800km, linking Ghana's north and south as well as international submarine gateways via its eastern corridor. It serves major towns such as Ho, Kpando, Jasikan, Nkwanta, Bimbilla, Yendi, Tamale, Gushiegua and Bawku as well as 23 smaller communities. It will be linked to the existing network in other parts of the country and facilitate network access to 120 District and Municipal Assemblies and surrounding communities.
President Mahama noted that the project would expand communication links between Ghana's Coastal line and Northern Boundary to Burkina Faso, adding that it would improve communications links for central and regional administration offices in support of the national e-Ghana program initiative.
Mr Mahama said communication technology was moving at a fast speed and Ghana could not afford to stay behind. That, he said, explained why government was investing a lot on modern technology.
The Minister for Communication, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, said the new eastern corridor fibre optic backbone network would offer a great number of direct socio-economic benefits for the communities within the catchment areas of the project.
For his part, Daniel Jaeger, Vice President, Alcatel-Lucent in Africa, observed that through technology and innovation, the project would help change the way people live, work and communicate providing an important platform for sustainable growth and development.
He said Alcatel-Lucent was delighted to be part of the project to support Ghana's government initiative at improving communications services in the country.
The Ghana Government, in collaboration with the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and Alcatel-Lucent, facilitated the development of the fibre optic backbone infrastructure on the country’s Eastern Corridor to support the deployment of the national e-Government Network.
