  • Oman: Implement e-government with caution, Arabs told

    An expert has urged Arab governments not to blindly adopt typically foreign experiences while implementing e-governance but develop what suits the conditions of the region.

    Abdul Raouf Ar-Rawabdeh, former Jordanian prime minister, said: "e-governance is not a new government that undertakes the responsibilities of the traditional government, but a new approach in the government activities."

  • Oman: Internet subscriber base reaches 90,000

    The number of Internet subscribers rose to more than 90,000 by end-May 2006 auguring well for the government's efforts to create a digital society and launch e-government services in the Sultanate.

    Statistics indicated that subscribers of high-speed Internet (ADSL) services climbed to 10,857 compared to 8,165 subscribers by the end of last year. The number of Internet subscribers rose to 85,981 by the end of last year. Omantel attributed the strong growth in Internet subscribers to the overall quality of the service and the attractive tariffs. The number of dial-up subscribers rose to 49,430 by end-May compared to 48,644 by the end of 2005.

  • Oman: ITA inks RO3.5m pact for e-govt services portal

    The Information Technology Authority (ITA) yesterday inked a crucial RO3.5 million agreement with GBM and NCS Group to set up the Ubar portal e-government servies.

    Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi, ITA chairman and secretary-general of the Ministry of National Economy, signed the agreement on behalf of ITA.

  • Oman: ITA signs MoU with ANCE of Tunisia for cooperative efforts in Digital Certification

    The Information Technology Authority (ITA) of Oman signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Digital Certification Agency (Agence Nationale de Certification Electronique - ANCE) to undertake cooperative efforts to establish the Digital Certification system for the Sultanate.

    The event was held at ITA premises in KOM, Rusayl on the 14th of March 2009. Dr. Salim Al-Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA and Mr. Sami Ghazali, CEO of ANCE sign the MoU.

  • Oman: ITA, IDA Singapore sign MoU for e-government

    Information Technology Authority (ITA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Infocommunications Development Authority (IDA), Singapore. Dr Salim al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, and Seah Chin Siong, CEO of IDA, signed the agreement on Sunday. Signing of the MoU is part of the agenda of the delegation from IDA headed by Seah Chin Siong, CEO, who is on two-day official visit to the Sultanate. Yip Kong Ban, Director of IDA, and Syed Faruk, Executive Consultant of IDA, are other senior members of the delegation.

  • Oman: KOM to have disaster recovery centre

    A state-of-the-art disaster recovery centre to protect and preserve all public sector information and data will come up at Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM), a senior official at the Information Technology Authority (ITA) said here yesterday.

    The disaster recovery centre, which is in the initial stages of development, will provide the system and infrastructure for the government to host their whole network system at this centre for disaster recovery, Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, head of ITA, told the Times of Oman.

  • Oman: Lecture on ‘e-government to e-governance’ held at KOM

    Yahya bin Saud bin Mansour Al Sulaimi, minister of education, inaugurated a lecture titled ‘e-government to e-governance’ at Knowledge Oasis Muscat yesterday.

    This lecture, the first in the ‘MECIT Series of Lectures on Digital Society’, is organised by the Middle East College of Information Technology (MECIT) and was delivered by Prof. Matthias P. Finger, an internationally well-known scholar in the area of e-governance.

  • Oman: Maqbool calls for better govt services

    The Sultanate has called for better government services as a priority instead of merely “converting them into e-enterprises on the heels of a global trend”.

    This clarion call was made by Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, minister of commerce and industry, who was addressing the first phase of the World Summit on Information Society being held here as His Majesty the Sultan’s representative yesterday.

  • Oman: Ministry of Health to be fully paperless by 2009

    The Ministry of Health along with all its healthcare institutions is set to be fully paperless by 2009. The National e-Health Strategy envisages "complete computerisation of all healthcare institutions by 2009", said Dr Ali bin Mohammed bin Moosa, Minister of Health, in comments to the Observer.

    Since the mid-1990s, said minister, the ministry has been moving forward with the integration of "Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in all the healthcare processes. All the processes starting with patients' registration, clinical documentation, investigations, ordering & results reporting, medication prescription to dispensing, nursing orders, operation's note, and discharge summary are performed using ICT tools. The use of ICT is quite spread in our healthcare institutions".

  • Oman: MoE to adopt ICDL programme in public schools to upgrade computer literacy

    The Ministry of Education (MoE) has unveiled its endorsement of the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) programme and its adoption in all its public schools effective this academic year, as a standard for upgrading the computer skills in the education sector across the Sultanate, following the success of the programme in other parts of the Gulf region.
  • Oman: Muscat gets funds for fibre optic network

    Oman’s telecommunications sector will receive a big boost with the implementation of an ambitious fibre optic network in Muscat for which funds have now been allocated by the government, a key official said.

    Secretary-general of the National Economy Ministry Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi said once the project was carried out, the sultanate would boast one of the latest telecom infrastructures in the world.

    “The sultanate is always keen to enhance the e-government infrastructure and keep pace with the latest developments in the telecommunications field,” he added, noting that telecommunications now played an important role in socio-economic development and “add value to life of citizens and residents in the country.”

  • Oman: National Data Centre launched

    The National Data Centre (NDC), designed and set up by the Information Technology Authority (ITA), was officially inaugurated yesterday under the auspices of Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy and deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, in the presence of several high-level dignitaries.

    The NDC has been set up with the objective of ensuring improved business continuity across the wide network of the government's IT systems. The centre has been designed to provide all ministries with multi-tenant high-availability data storage facilities to host their wide array of information as well as to offer disaster recovery solutions. It currently hosts national level projects such as the government's e-Services portal, eTendering system and ITA's internal infrastructure projects and systems.

  • Oman: National Data Centre launched by H.E. Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki

    The National Data Centre (NDC) designed and set-up by the Information technology Authority (ITA) was officially inaugurated on the 3rd May 2009 under the auspices of H.E. Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, Minister of National Economy.

    Several high level dignitaries including the Minister of Commerce & Industry, General Secretary of Ministry of Finance, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Communications, Under Secretary at the Minister of Commerce & Industry, CEO of Omantel, CEO of PEIE, board of directors of ITA, a number of Excellencies and Under Secretaries and other notable guests attended this launch ceremony.

  • Oman: National e-payment gateway likely soon

    The much-awaited national e-payment gateway is expected to take off by June/July this year, Information Technology Authority (ITA) announced here yesterday.

    The e-payment gateway, ITA sources said, would be operational in line with Oman’s forthcoming e-government gateway called the UBAR portal. It will support multiple acquiring banks. To facilitate this mechanism, ITA yesterday signed agreements with MasterCard Worldwide and BankMuscat to launch the ‘national e-payment gateway’ to provide an e-governance infrastructure and full e-commerce facilities that allow secure online payments.

  • Oman: Next 5-year data plan programmes presented

    The Ministry of National Economy yesterday presented applications and programmes to be employed for data entry of the 8th Five-Year Development Plan Project (2011-2015). The first-day of the programme included the presentation of the e-systems and computer applications to be used by ministries and government departments for data entry of the 8th five-year development plan 2011-2015.

    Mehdi bin Mohammed al Abdwani, Director General of Development Planning at the Ministry, said that the demonstration aims to shed light on the steps taken by the National Economy Ministry to device the investment electronic system of the 8th five-year developmental plan which includes the E-Format for new projects.

  • Oman: Official eGovernment portal launched

    The official eGovernment Services Portal (www.oman.om) and the national awareness campaign, under the umbrella of e.oman, Oman's national IT strategy, was launched here yesterday under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tareq al Said, Minister of Heritage and culture. Board Members of ITA; Dr Salem bin Sultan al Ruzaiqi, the ITA's Chief Executive Officer; and other dignitaries attended the event. The launch of the Official eGovernment Services Portal, the nation's flagship achievement, marks a major milestone in the Sultanate's ambitious journey in transforming Oman by empowering its people, through the e.oman Initiative, within the digital society.

  • Oman: Officials urge greater awareness on e-Gate

    The Electronic Educational Gate (e-Gate) is aimed at making use of modern technology in academics through the internet link between schools, the directorates and departments of education and the ministry. It helps to share the database between the school administrations, teachers, students and parents.

    Dr Salim bin Said Al Bahri, director-general at the Directorate-General of Education for Al Buraimi said: “The e-Gate project is about the future plans on utilising the technology and contemporary knowledge and sciences in modernisation of administrative systems.”

  • Oman: Pact of consultancy services on e-government laws signed

    An agreement providing for consultancy services for the development of e-legislation to support Oman digital society and e-government initiative was signed yesterday by Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi, secretary-general at the Ministry of National Economy and head of the executive committee following up implementation of the national information technology strategy.

    The agreement was signed with Said Al Shahry Law Office, which is in partnership for this project with the law firm Baker & McKenzie.

    Participants in the e-governance symposium here have agreed on the necessity to introduce the e-government as it improves the way public services are provided; is transparent; reduces bureaucracy and expands the working opportunities, especially for women.
  • Oman: Participants discuss hurdles in e-governance

    Participants in the e-government symposium resumed their discussions at Al Bustan Palace Hotel yesterday.

    The symposium entitled ‘e-governance reality and challenges’ started on Saturday and is being held jointly by Muscat Municipality, the Arab Urban Development Institute and the World Bank.
