The disaster recovery centre, which is in the initial stages of development, will provide the system and infrastructure for the government to host their whole network system at this centre for disaster recovery, Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, head of ITA, told the Times of Oman.
Under this master plan, a mega communications infrastructure bringing all government bodies under one online network will be created in four years time connecting nearly 700 government sites all across the Sultanate.
Omantel will build and operate the Convergent Government Network connecting governmental sites by employing state-of-the-art technologies to deliver a reliable and efficient service.
The Convergent Government Network is considered to be unique as it employs Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that define the expected quality of service and support.
This disaster recovery centre, meanwhile, is being envisaged as back up centre for the soon-to-be-established digital society to protect against theft of information by hackers, loss of data because of disasters like fire etc.
As the e-government systems are underway in Oman, it is critical for the government organisations to protect the information systems in order to create the required level of trust and security within these systems. The disaster recovery centre is expected to be part of such a security policy and procedures.
“This centre will come up at KOM 3 and will be enough for all government agencies to put their disaster recovery equipment there,” Dr Salim informed.
When we provide such a service, it is going to be important, so everyone can do their disaster recovery there and it is going to managed by the government, Dr Salim said further.
Dr Salim also disclosed that the building will be ready by September and international tenders will be floated for this centre.
