  • Oman unveils blueprint for smart, sustainable cities

    Oman’s ambitious urban vision is taking shape, spearheaded by a dynamic blueprint unveiled by Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning. At the recent media briefing titled “Oman and the World,” the minister outlined a transformative agenda aimed at positioning the country as a premier investment destination and a pioneer of sustainable urban living. This strategic push aligns with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, setting the stage for cutting-edge urban developments and thriving communities.

    Central to Oman’s urban strategy is the empowerment of investors and real estate developers through streamlined regulations and collaborative frameworks. Dr Al Shueili underscored the Ministry’s commitment to fostering partnerships between government entities, private investors, and stakeholders—a synergy seen as the backbone of Oman’s urban renaissance.

  • Oman unveils plans for 100,000-person ‘smart’ city

    Oman has unveiled ambitious plans for a new 100,000-person “smart” city outside its capital, Muscat.

    Set across 14.8 square kilometers (5.7 square miles), Sultan Haitham City will be roughly equivalent in size to Beverly Hills — but with almost three times as many residents.

    The plan, which was shared exclusively with CNN by the US architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), includes 20,000 homes, as well as a university, schools, health facilities and mosques. It is due to be built on a largely undeveloped site in Al-Seeb, several kilometers west of Muscat.

  • Oman wins 7 awards for eGovernment initiatives

    Oman made a remarkable presence at the 3rd GCC eGovernment Award, Conference and Exhibition which concluded on December 11 in Dubai, winning 7 awards in 14 categories for various eGovernment initiatives, services and projects. The conference made several of recommendations necessary to foster the drive towards a comprehensive eGovernments and eventually smart governments. The 3rd GCC eGovernment Conference Commission has had several meetings on the sidelines of the conference, and concluded with a list of recommendations that emerged from the current GCC strategic approach towards the eGovernment and its implementation process. Also, the commission was keen on considering what has resulted from the recommendations of the two previous conferences in Muscat 2009 and Kuwait 2011. This is to ensure a specific build-on recommendations as well as a clear image of the present eGovernment requirements.

  • Oman wins 7 e-govt awards at 3rd GCC e-awards, Dubai

    The Sultanate of Oman have been awarded seven important awards at the 3rd GCC e-Government Award, Conference and Exhibition hosted by Shaikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Dubai.

    The GCC e-awards, which features nine categories, subjects applicants for the awards to rigorous reviews by a jury committee, comprised of a number of e-government experts and specialists.

  • Oman, Singapore join hands for e-services

    Oman is looking to Singapore to guide it towards a futuristic model of e-government to make public service in Oman smoother, faster and more efficient.

    There is great potential for further cooperation between Oman and Singapore in e-government services, given the challenges that the two countries are facing in this area, according to senior Omani and Singaporean information technology officials.

  • Oman: A significant push to improve e-services

    Oman's burgeoning IT sector has been in focus again this month, as the Sultanate played host to the COMEX exhibition, the IT, telecoms and technology show. The event was held on April 26-30 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre (OIEC), hosted over 100 companies from across the region and further afield, and included a pavilion specialising on e-government and e-business in the Sultanate held on the 27th, where the CEO of the Information Technology Authority (ITA), Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi, was keynote speaker.

    The Omani authorities have made a significant push in recent years to improve their e-government offering, including the creation of an internet portal for government services and, most recently, the inauguration of the Sultanate's first cyber centre. The latter facility, based in the capital, Muscat, and known as the Oman National Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT), was opened earlier in April to provide the Sultanate with enhanced security for its information assets, as well as coordinating emergency responses to incidents relating to the internet.

    Sayyid Ali bin Hamoud bin Ali Al Busaidi, minister of the diwan of royal court, yesterday inaugurated a three-day symposium, entitled ‘e-government opportunities and challenges’, jointly organised by Muscat Municipality and the Arab Urban Development Institute (AUDI).
  • Oman: Badr Al Samaa launches telemedicine centre

    Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals has launched its telemedicine centre in Ruwi.

    Badr Al Samaa is one of the largest hospital groups in the region, and the telemedicine centre is the first of its kind in the country’s private sector.

    “We are the first private sector hospital to instal a telemedicine centre in the Sultanate. The new system is the integration of video, audio and peripheral to enable two or more doctors to communicate simultaneously over telecommunication lines. Video conferencing will transmit synchronised images and verbal communication between two or more in lieu of them being in the same room,” members of the board of directors of the hospital said here yesterday.

  • Oman: BankMuscat launches exclusive e-payment card for corporates

    BankMuscat, a leading financial services provider in the Sultanate, has launched a new e-payment card for corporates. The electronic chip-based pre-paid card branded as e-Cash is primarily designed for large fee-based transactions at government establishments in Oman. Corporates are not required to maintain an account with the Bank to avail the offline card, which can be loaded in multiples of RO 5 to a maximum amount of RO 16,000.

    Reflecting its instant appeal, Jawad Sultan Enterprises was the first corporate to acquire the card. "The e-Cash card is another step toward achieving the government's vision of promoting card as the mode of payment. With the introduction of e-Cash, the payment landscape significantly changes for corporates in Oman. Ushering in convenience, the new card streamlines payment and improves the delivery of government services", Sulaiman al Harthy, Group Deputy General Manager, Consumer Banking, BankMuscat, said.

  • Oman: BankMuscat leads in e-payment

    Consolidating its dominant position in launching innovative technology products and services which spell convenience to customers, BankMuscat, the leading financial services provider in the Sultanate, has taken the lead in rolling out electronic card payment facility for government services offered as part of the Sultanate's e-Governance initiative.

    BankMuscat recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Justice to introduce electronic card payment facility for judicial services rendered at courts and notary public offices across Oman.

  • Oman: Cyber laws may be introduced this year: ITA chief

    Oman will have a cyber law, which is expected to come into effect by this year. “The cyber law is actually under revision by the authorities concerned and we don’t expect it to take more than this year,” Dr Salim bin Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, head of the recently established Information Technology Authority, ITA, said exclusively to the Times of Oman.

    The ITA was formerly known as the ITTS (information technology technical secretariat).

  • Oman: E-gateway Ubar portal to be awarded next week

    Role of information security practitioners vital

    The Sultanate's E-government initiatives have made major strides with announcement on the operator of the common gateway Ubar portal expected within a week. "The Ubar portal will provide e-services of the government and the selected partner will be announced within a week," Dr. Salim Sultan al Ruzaiqi, Chief Executive Officer of Information Technology Authority (ITA) at the Ministry of National Economy, said.

  • Oman: e-Governance

    As a part of the sultanate's overall e-government strategy, on December 2, the ministry of health (MoH) announced the latest set of services that will be offered online. The plan outlined the development of three digital tools to better extend the ministry's services.

    The first to be launched will be an e-Referral Engine, which was successfully tested in a pilot programme in August. The programme will replace paper-based referrals between institutions. It will be initially deployed to tertiary hospitals in the coming months and gradually be extended to other hospitals and health centres in the next year, according to a release by the MoH.

  • Oman: E-payments accepted at ROP directorates

    With the advent of electronic payments and innovative payment technology, new systems that promote acceptance have made transactions more secure, efficient and convenient than ever before.

    As the lead issuer and acquirer of cards in Oman, BankMuscat has taken upon itself the task of accelerating the development of the e-payment network in Oman and in opening up electronic banking channels. E-payment is now accepted at all Royal Oman Police (ROP) directorates. In fact, it is understood that the ROP aims to gradually eliminate all cash dealings.

  • Oman: e-service gateway by year-end

    Oman’s e-government initiatives are on the right track. The much-publicised e-services gateway — UBAR portal — is expected to become a reality by year-end or early 2007.

    “We have proposed to launch the government e-services gateway (UBAR portal), which is an integral part of eOman — by year-end or early 2007. A tender to facilitate the national e-service gateway will be floated soon,” Dr Salim bin Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of Information Technology Authority (ITA), told the Times of Oman yesterday.

  • Oman: ePayment Gateway launched

    Oman crossed yet another milestone yesterday on the digital domain when the national ePayment Gateway pioneered by Information Technology Authority (ITA) was launched in the presence of Lieutenant-General Malik bin Suleiman Al Ma'amari, inspector-general of police and customs, Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy and deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council Juma bin Ali bin Juma, minister of manpower Mohammed Nasser Al Khusaibi, chairman of ITA, and other high-level dignitaries.

    Earlier, a film on Information Technology Authority, which endeavours to consolidate and implement the Digital Oman strategy to transform the Sultanate of Oman into a knowledge-based economy for the achievement of social and economic benefits to Omani society, was screened. Salim Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, averred that the launch of ePayment has ushered in a new era of making electronic transaction easier by launching a secure and safe payment gateway.

  • Oman: GCC eGovernment meet to draw up strategic plan

    The first Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) eGovernment Conference is set to create a strategic plan for regional e-governance in the future during a three-day conference that will be hosted in Oman from December 21-23, according to a top Information Technology Authority (ITA) official in the country.

    Speaking at a press conference Saturday, ITA CEO Dr Salim Bin Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, said the conference will provide a platform for closer cooperation and coordinated strategic policymaking to ensure the benefits of eGovernment are felt across the GCC region.
