  • India can lead world if education reforms are affected: Ansari

    Observing that India can lead the world if educational reforms are effected, Vice President Hamid Ansari on Saturday asked the youth to come forward and take the concept of e-governance to the people.

    Interacting with the students of Symbiosis university here, Ansari asked them to "understand and take the concept of e-governance to the people".

  • India framing national mission for ICT in education

    The Indian Government is developing a National Mission on ICT aiming to create a national IT platform connecting all schools, providing students and teachers with opportunities to collaborate and share knowledge.

    Through this mission, the Government is looking to take on a learner-centric approach in delivering education by facilitating the provision of infrastructure that will connect the schools to internet at minimum 10 mbps.

  • India to train officials for e-governance

    The Indian government will spend Rs.3.13 billion ($80 million) over three years to build capacity of policy and decision makers for the nation's e-governance plan, to be implemented by the department of information technology.

    The capacity building scheme, approved Thursday by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs, will provide technical and professional help to develop specialised e-governance skills to policy and decision making bodies in all the states and union territories.

  • India: 45,000 Kerala students to be trained in IT

    The Kerala government's IT@School Project starting next week for six days will impart customised information technoloy training to 45,000 school students.

    IT@School, which is the technology arm of the general education department of the Kerala government, was set up for empowering schools with latest information and communications technology (ICT)-enabled education, besides implementing e-governance within the education department.

    The project has recently received 'Honorable Mention' in Stockholm Challenge Award-2010 and has been considered the world's biggest ICT deployment in education using free software.

  • India: Award for TAPMI's e-Gov programme

    eGPX - a unique one year Post Graduate e-Governance Programme for Executives [eGPX] designed for Middle and Senior level Executives from Government, Public and Private sectors at the Manipal based T. A. Pai Management Institute [TAPMI] has been shortlisted from over 500 nominations for the eINDIA 2010 "Skill Development Initiative of the Year" award. The award is given to innovative endeavors by eIndia 2010, the country's largest ICT event taking place in Hyderabad from August 4, 2010 to August 6, 2010. The Awards have been instituted with the primary aim of felicitating and acknowledging unique and innovative initiatives in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Development.

    TAPMI is the only B-School to start the one of its kind course in India. The programme is being offered by TAPMI in collaboration with National Institute for Smart Government [NISG], Hyderabad with support from the Department of Information Technology Ministry of Communications & IT, and Government of India. TAPMI is the first management institute in the country to be selected to conduct a post graduate e-governance programme for executives in collaboration with NISG.

  • India: C-DAC, CSI team in bid to plug IT domain skill gap

    The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the Computer Society of India (CSI) on Sunday signed an MoU for joint programmes on skill upgradation, training and certifications. The pact will boost domains like Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), Indian language computing, e-governance, information security, embedded systems and cloud computing.

    “Our MoU with CSI will help in enhancing the outreach of C-DAC to the furthest parts of country,” says Rajan T Joseph, director general, C-DAC.

  • India: Computer knowledge must for judges: Supreme Court

    Judges should have basic computer knowledge at the time of appointment and a candidate who fails to fulfil the requirement can be denied employment, the Supreme Court has ruled.

    A Bench of Justices Mukundakam Sharma and A R Dave passed the ruling while dismissing a Civil Judge aspirant Vijendra Kumar Verma's plea challenging the decision of Uttarkhand Government to reject his candidature after he failed to display basic computer knowledge.

  • India: Goa to boost computer knowledge among govt employees

    In a move to uplift Goa to bring it on par with other IT savvy cities, the state government is considering imparting ‘computer literacy’ to all its employees.

    “If Goa has to be at par with other IT cities like Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad, then we need to expedite certain things,” Information Technology (IT) Chairman Subhash Shirodkar said at the launch of ‘e-SMS Goa Mobile Governance’ and IT Knowledge Centres on Tuesday evening.

    He said that over 600 persons have taken admission in the Info Tech Corporation of Goa Ltd’s (ITG) 40 IT knowledge centres across the state.

  • India: IGNOU to set up national centre for IT-enabled education

    The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is setting up a nodal centre here to facilitate collaboration in research among colleges, universities, and R&D establishments across the country.

    The Advanced Centre of Informatics and Innovative Learning (ACIIL), to be established as a hub institute on the lines of National Education Grid, will work as an autonomous inter-institutional centre of excellence under Open University Act and will be governed by the UGC.

  • India: IT knowledge to be compulsory for govt jobs in future: govt

    The Information Technology Minister, Mr Dayanand Narvekar has said that knowledge of IT would be made mandatory for government jobs in future and that the government would set up training institutes all over the state for the purpose. The government has ambitious plan to implement e-governance policy.

    Addressing a press conference this afternoon, Mr Narvekar said that at the moment the applicants to various government jobs have been producing certificates from various private institutes, which are accepted by the government in absence of there being no norms and recognised institutions.

  • India: IT training for State employees - Pilot project launched in Malappuram

    The State Information Technology (IT) Mission has begun giving free computer training to Government employees. Each of the five lakh Government staff in the State will get 40 hours of computer training over three years. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan launched the training programme here on Sunday.

    About 2,000 police officers in Malappuram district will get training in the first phase of the programme, being conducted here in association with Akshaya.

    The pilot phase of training will cover 38,000 Government employees working in different departments in Malappuram district.

  • India: Karnataka: Manipal: e-Gov Programme launched by TAPMI

    T A Pai Management Institute [TAPMI] launched the eGovernance Programme for executives in collaboration with the National Institute for Smart Government [NISG] recently. The programme was inaugurated at T.A. Pai Management Institute - Manipal New Campus. The guests included senior leaders from the corporate world and the academia.

    In his welcome address, Dr. Saji Gopinath - Director, TAPMI welcomed the guests and extended his whole-hearted support in terms of provision of campus facilities to participants. The introduction to the programme was given by Prof Harish P Iyer - Co-ordinator eGPX. He spoke of the journey of eGPX, the commitment of TAPMI towards it and also the passion of the participants towards the eGPX programme. According to him, the important factor in selection of candidates was their commitment to a worthy cause. Furthermore, he stated that it was not just career progress or financial growth that inspired participants, but their passion towards learning about ICT enabled eGovernance.

  • India: Kerala scores with open source training

    IT Kerala has claimed success in its initiative to promote use of free open source software (FOSS) in the state, with the first batch of its FOSS-skilled personnel trained by the Centre for Advanced Training in Free Open Source Software, being fully placed in government and private organizations.

    IT Kerala officials said this was the first time in the country that a state government had taken the initiative to promote use of FOSS in e-governance and introduced a course to develop FOSS-skilled personnel.

    In a first-of-its-kind initiative by any state government in the country to promote a career in e-Governance, the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala (IIITM-K) and the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) have joined hands to launch of a Post Graduate Diploma course in e-Governance.

    The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala, and the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) have jointly launched a postgraduate (PG) diploma course in e-governance, a first-of-its-kind initiative by any state government in the country to promote a career in this space.

  • India: Literacy boost via Edusat, DTH and broadband

    The new National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will use Education Satellite (EduSat) and direct-to-home (DTH) platforms for providing high quality personalised and interactive knowledge modules over the internet/intranet for all the learners in Higher Education Institutions in any time anywhere mode.

    The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, approving the Mission submitted by the Human Resource Development Ministry as a Centrally-sponsored scheme, approved an amount of Rs 46.12 billion during the 11th Five Year Plan. There is a budget provision of Rs 5.02 billion during the current financial year 2008-09.

  • India: Madhya Pradesh: Skill improvement possible with use of computer: Jain

    Use of computer definitely leads to capacity improvement. Officers and employees should have knowledge of computer for e-governance in Madhya Pradesh. These views were expressed by Secretary Information Technology Anurag Jain while addressing a seminar on the topic 'e-governance and computerisation - achievements and possibilities' at RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration here today.

    Secretary Higher Education Ashish Upadhyaya, Director General of the Academy Dr Sandeep Khanna, Director MK Varshney, trainee officers of Revenue, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture departments were also present at the seminar.

  • India: Maharashtra govt wants to put schools on hi-tech road

    City schools may go all hi-tech, if the plan to implement e-governance in schools is adopted successfully.

    Students’ classroom attendance will be taken through the biometric system, smart cards will generate report cards and a tracking system will keep parents in the know-how of their children.

    All this and many such features will be introduced, if the feasibility study throws up a positive result.

  • India: Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation plans virtual academy for vocational skills in agriculture

    A virtual academy that aims at bridging the huge skill gap between the organised and the organised workers in the agricultural sector, by offering open education resources in different agricultural trades, will soon be set up by the city-based Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL).

    "We are putting a Rs 300 crore proposal for the academy by end of this month before the state government," said Vivek Sawant, managing director of the MKCL, which is a company promoted by the state government to ensure convergence of traditional classroom-based learning and web-based collaborative e-learning. The MKCL is celebrating the 10th year of its inception this year.

  • India: Nagaland: Government working to improve IT: Sukhalu

    Secretary of information technology and communications, K.T Sukhalu on Friday reiterated that government was working for improving and reaching IT connectivity to all parts of the state. He assured that Nagaland entering the main internet highway was in the offing.

    Speaking at the closing programme of a two-day workshop on e-NGO at Working Women’s Hostel Kohima, Sukhalu said poor connectivity of digital technology faced by people in remote areas of the state would be dealt with.
