Transforming Government since 2001
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is setting up a nodal centre here to facilitate collaboration in research among colleges, universities, and R&D establishments across the country.

The Advanced Centre of Informatics and Innovative Learning (ACIIL), to be established as a hub institute on the lines of National Education Grid, will work as an autonomous inter-institutional centre of excellence under Open University Act and will be governed by the UGC.

"The new centre will help in providing technology enabled teaching, training and in conducting capacity building exercises by facilitating collaboration among universities, colleges and R&D organisations," Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, told PTI.

"Presently our institutions are functioning in isolation. This fragmented system is unable to produce the kind of result needed for today's knowledge-driven economy and socio-economic development. But the new centre will emerge as a confluence of several streams of education," he said.

The ACIIL will conduct academic research at post-graduate and PhD levels in areas such Information Sciences, Applied Computer Sciences, scientific database management apart from development of web-resources, e-governance and extend knowledge in areas related to socioeconomic development, he said.

"Agriculture, Health, Education, community development and new streams like community heritage and environment are a few areas of socio-economic values in which the ACIIL will try to facilitate use of information and communication technology to make them effective and result oriented," Pillai noted.
