  • UAE: GCAA's efforts applauded at premiere GCC e-Government Award ceremony

    The efforts of the General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE (GCAA) were recognised at the premiere GCC e-Government Award ceremony, held in the Sultanate of Oman on the 23rd of December 2009. The panel of judges nominated the GCAA as 3rd place winners for the 'Best e-Content Website in the Gulf.'

    The award was presented by H.E Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki National Economy Minister to Eng Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, the IT Manager at General Civil Aviation Authority at the 1st GCC e-Government Award ceremony held at Al Bustan Palace Hotel in Oman.

  • UAE: General Information Authority and Abu Dhabi eGovernment sign MoU

    The General Information Authority (GIA), assigned to carry out the eGovernment project at the federal level, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC), for co-operation in the IT and eGovernment fields.

    The agreement was signed by H.E Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of GIA, and H.E Mohammed Ahmad Al Bawardi, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

  • UAE: General Information Authority applies "Cloud Computing" in launching government shared services

    The Second Federal eGovernment Program Forum concluded the activities of its first day in Dubai on Sunday. A most impressive highlight of the forum was the announcement of the General Information Authority (GIA) of the launch of a bouquet of shared services that the GIA provides to ministries and government authorities and corporations in the UAE.

    On Monday it will witness the activities of the forum's second and last day. The GIA had previously extended invitations to all directors general, chief executive officers, eServices directors, information technology (IT) directors, the staff of IT departments and those in charge of eServices at government bodies to attend the forum and get familiarized with the new government shared services, which represent the landmarks of a genuine process for paving the way to eGovernment at the federal level.

  • UAE: General Information Authority begins second phase of federal websites evaluation

    The General Information Authority (GIA) has started the second phase of evaluating the websites of federal ministries, authorities and councils in the UAE. The evaluation process is part of the overall plan to enhance and develop federal government websites according to international standards. Last year, the Cabinet issued decree number 7 for 2009 asking federal government entities to implement the websites standards and guidelines.

    The same decree tasked GIA with following up with government entities to make sure those standards are implemented.

    H.E. Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Information Authority explained n that the website evaluation process is in line with the efforts of the General Information Authority to drive the e-transformation and e-government foundations at the federal level.

  • UAE: Get DSF 2008 information on your mobile from Dubai eGovernment

    Dubai eGovernment has announced that it is offering instant information on the go for DSF 2008 events through mDubai, the innovative channel it offers for communication between citizens and government departments via SMS.

    Users can either get information on 5 random events of the day or request for specific events of the day. To request for information in Arabic for 5 random events, users need to type DSF A and send it as an SMS to 4488. The same information can be received in English by typing DSF E.

  • UAE: GIA launches government workshop on electronic presence standards

    The General Information Authority (GIA) has held a workshop with the participation of all ministries, authorities and federal government councils with the aim of training those in charge of websites in these bodies in applying the highest standards related to online presence.

    The 5-day workshop, which was held at Hall 5, Zayed University in Dubai, featured lectures and discussions on the official guide of websites, which the GIA distributed to the different federal government authorities.

    'Khibrate' program focuses on courses that deliver added value to government workplaces and enhance performance of employees

    General Information Authority (GIA), in collaboration with the National Academy for Research and Development (NARD), has announced that it has recently launched the ‘Khibrate’ (My Skills) program, which aims to empower government employees as well as other members of the community with practical and professional skills. The establishment of the Khibrate program is part of GIA's continuing efforts to build a society based on knowledge and to implement the UAE e-Strategy.

  • UAE: GIA organizes workshop on government E-Readiness in cooperation with the UN

    UN Adviser for e-government Richard Kirby is the main speaker at the event which aims at improving the E-Readiness in the UAE

    The General Information Authority (GIA) is organizing a workshop on e-Government in cooperation with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). The two-day workshop which aims at exploring ways to improve the performance of the e-Government in the UAE will start on Monday, 13th December in Dubai. UN Adviser for e-government Richard Kirby will be the main speaker at the event.

    Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Information Authority said that through organizing this workshop, GIA aims to give representatives from the five ministries that are evaluated in the process of preparing the e-Government Readiness Index, the chance to meet Mr. Mr. Richard Kirby, a global expert who is the technical officer of the Report and the regional adviser for e-government at the UN. They will learn from him about the methodology and tools used in evaluating government websites.

    The General Information Authority (GIA) is conducting a gap analysis to raise technology standards within government departments and ministries.

    The authority is a leading federal institution providing technology consultancy and services for all ministries and government institutions.

    Electronic transformation within government departments and ministries has yet to achieve higher standards to deliver efficient egovernment services to UAE customers, said a top government official.

  • UAE: Global interest in Dubai brings millions to DTCM website

    The unfaltering global interest in Dubai and the initiatives to promote and market the emirate as an ideal year-round business and leisure destination are bringing millions of people from across the continents to the user-friendly, informative website of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

    The hugely-popular web address is receiving an average of 16 million hits a month since the start of 2006, up from the average 13 million a month last year.

    Andrea Di Maio, research vice president for government at Gartner, recently visited Dubai and Abu Dhabi to talk to regional government organisations and enterprises. He says that a number of factors in the Middle East could give regional e-government initiatives a boost.

    Dubai residents could soon be able to make Salik topup payments using their mobile phones, Dubai e-Government and Etisalat revealed yesterday.

    "We are coming up with a mobile payment system enabling you to pay for government services from your mobile and we are already in discussions with the RTA (Road Transport Authority) regarding [mobile phone payments] for Salik," says Ahmed Abdulkarim Julfar, Etisalat COO.

  • UAE: Government ministers and industry leaders explore economic impact of Internet and ICT

    Industry leaders and government ministers from across the Middle East and Africa are meeting today at the Etisalat Academy to share knowledge and research on the impact that ICT development and the Internet is having on regional economies.

    The conference, which is entitled 'Driving Development with ICT and the Internet' is being held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Lubna Al-Qasimi, Minister of Economy, and will be attended by high profile government delegations from Egypt, Jordan.

  • UAE: Government staff receive training on new customer complaints system

    The Dubai Government Excellence Programme (DGEP) conducted a workshop to train employees in charge of implementing the new Customer Complaints System in the public sector.

    The session was addressed by Ahmad Bin Byat, Secretary General of the Executive Council, Salem Khamees Al Shaer, Director of Dubai e-government, and Ahmad Nuseirat, General Coordinator of Dubai Government Excellence Programme.

  • UAE: Government to put right problems with official websites

    Error-riddled government websites are to receive a funding boost that is expected to help improve online services.

    The extra cash will come from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) when it takes over the General Information Authority (GIA), which manages e-government projects.

    The move was made official by a Cabinet resolution declared last week by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

    The Heads of eGovernment teams from various government departments in Dubai were urged to make optimum use of the online learning opportunities available on Dubai eGovernment's portal (www.dubai.ae), at the recent meeting convened by Dubai eGovernment. The move is aimed at accelerating the integration of their services with the eGovernment initiative. The department heads were also updated on the various eServices offered on the portal.
