Global research seminar series tackles SDGs

Academics from some of the world's top institutions will come together in August to brainstorm ideas to create more sustainable cities and communities.

Over a series of three virtual workshops, from 2-15 August, academics from Cornell University, UCL and Tata Institute of Social Sciences will join colleagues from the University of Sydney as well as industry representatives and non-government organisations, to discuss ideas to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

For about 15 years, the City of Hobart had been using CCTV to protect council property and keep the streets safe. But the system was ad-hoc, patchy, siloed, unreliable.

That changed some two years ago when Council decided to upgrade the city’s legacy security system and reinstate it as a single, citywide integrated network.

Residents and business owners will find it easier and more cost-effective to access Council services, information and support thanks to Logan City Council’s 2022/2023 Budget.

Council will undertake a series of IT upgrades that will improve and strengthen digital capacity, provide value-for-money outcomes for ratepayers and increase cyber security.

Private companies and public authorities are quietly using facial recognition systems around Australia.

Despite the growing use of this controversial technology, there is little in the way of specific regulations and guidelines to govern its use.

Maribyrnong council has taken another step towards plans for the area to become a ‘smart city’, with the launch of the Smart City Strategic Framework and a showcase tour of Footscray.

Hosted on behalf of the Australian Smart Communities Association, the networking event saw participants inspect how smart technologies are being utilised in Footscray.

The initiative took its first steps in 2019 after the council received a $400,000 grant from the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program to deliver the Smart City for Social Cohesion project.
