Rankings intended to raise awareness and spur innovation

Phuket has been ranked as the top province-based smart city, while the Wang Chan Valley in Rayong province was named the leading city-based smart area in the country, according to the Thailand Smart City Competitiveness Index 2023.

The index assessed 30 cities in 23 provinces to raise awareness among leaders and residents about the progress, strengths and weaknesses of smart city development, according to the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa).

Phuket ranks as Thailand’s most technologically advanced province among 23 smart provinces while Wangchan Valley in Rayong tops the list of 30 smart cities, the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa) announced on Wednesday (June 19).

Depa’s Smart Cities Office released the ranking of 30 smart cities in 23 provinces for 2023 as part of its report, “Thailand Smart City Competitiveness Index (TSCCI) 2023”.

Bangkok Land, a Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)-listed company, is poised to transform Mueang Thong Thani into a smart city district. This ambitious plan includes the establishment of a new seafood and fruit centre aimed at providing affordable goods to attract tourists to Nonthaburi. The development is strategically timed to coincide with the launch of the Pink Line monorail service, set to commence operations next year.

Paul Kanjanapas, Chief Executive of Bangkok Land and operator of Impact Exhibition Management, highlighted that Mueang Thong Thani is home to approximately 300,000 residents, with about 200,000 commuting daily. The development initiative aims not only to increase revenue for residents and local businesses, such as restaurants but also to promote sustainable development practices. These include energy-saving measures and safety management, enhanced by future artificial intelligence technologies.

MDES–DEPA announced the success of DIGITAL INFINITY: SMART LIVING project, building a Smart City with digital technology to boost the country’s economic value by more than 200 million baht.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), led by DEPA along with collaborative networks, announced the success of the DIGITAL INFINITY: SMART LIVING project. This project aims to create a livable smart city through digital technology, advancing smart city levels in Smart Economy, Smart Living, and Smart Governance across 11 areas in 10 provinces nationwide. The project has generated economic value exceeding 200 million baht and is poised to amplify its impact to promote and develop smart cities nationwide.
