Ha Noi authorities on Friday officially launched a website the "first step towards an E-government" which will strengthen public administration in the capital city.

"This is a landmark step towards an electronic society in the Ha Noi. The city has recorded important achievements recently but it lacks a strong public administration", Ha Noi Mayor Hoang Van Nghien said at the opening which coincided with the 49th anniversary of the capital's liberation from the French colonialist regime.

HCM City has planned to invest a total of 1.1 million USD towards the application of information technology this year. IT is considering the industry one of the 10 key socio-economic projects, leading to the first stages in e-government, announced vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Nguyen Thien Nhan at a recent meeting for representatives from IT industry.

Policy makers at a workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday vowed to build an efficient administrative apparatus as a first step in an e-government master plan.

The symposium was held by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, (MPT) UNDP, Singapore’s Infocomn Development Authority-IDA, and the U.S Cisco Systems corporation.

Vietnam should reach an advanced level in its e-government programme by 2010, if the latest targets are met.

The advanced-level target, which is based on the progress of other Southeast Asian nations, was announced by the Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mai Liem Truc, during a recent e-government conference in Hanoi.
