Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, is rapidly evolving into a smart city of the future, leveraging innovative strategies and technologies to drive urban progress. The city’s transformation is a testament to the potential of smart city technologies to improve urban living, boost economic growth, and enhance sustainability.

At the heart of Prague’s smart city initiative is the deployment of advanced technologies to optimize city services and infrastructure. The city is leveraging the power of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data analytics to enhance the efficiency of public services, improve traffic management, and reduce environmental impact. For instance, Prague is implementing smart traffic lights that adjust to real-time traffic conditions, reducing congestion and improving road safety.

Up to 85 percent of the costs for creating the charging stations could come from an EU program.

Prague City Hall hopes to expand the infrastructure network for charging electric cars without breaking its budget. The city now expects that up to 85 percent of planned investment costs could come from subsidies from European funds.

When the charging stations are in operation, people with electric cars will be able to pay to for charging using the ID Lítačka mobile app.

Pilot safety projects are in the works in Pilsen and Bilina

Several Czech cities are working on the implementation of 5G networks for the acceleration of smart technologies. Among them, especially worth mentioning are Pilsen and Bílina, where the technology will benefit the safety of inhabitants.

The Czech city aims to develop a fully autonomous tram by 2027

On 25 May, the City of Pilsen announced its plans to create a living laboratory and a centre for smart mobility by 2027. This living laboratory will be developed with the aim of testing various models of smart transport in a real environment.

Taking this further, Pilsen signed a memorandum of cooperation with several organisations to develop the city’s first smart tram. With its development, Pilsen seeks to become the first smart city of its kind in the Czech Republic.

The City of Prostějov is located in the district of Prostějov, Olomouc Region of the Czech Republic, in the historical region of Moravia. It has a population of 43,859 (Czech Statistical Office, 2017). A centre of the fashion industry with rich historical heritage, it has set the objective of becoming a smart city, whereby ensuring the sustainable development and efficient management of the city of Prostějov. This ambition of local authorities is summarized in dedicated open-access Manual, issued in August 2018, which reflects the comprehensive strategy, sets ambitious goals and oversees long-term challenges before the intelligent urban development.
