Open data has potential to bring economic benefits to Indonesians, believes open government team.

Indonesia has had a Freedom of Information Act since 2008, but officials are still reluctant to release open data to the public, according to the government’s open data team.

The biggest challenge is to convince ministries and agencies that open data is good for them, Prasetya Dwicahya, Associate Director, Open Government Indonesia said.

Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister Marwan Jafar says the government is ready to provide an Internet connection to more than 5,000 villages in the country.

To anticipate the project, Marwan urged village heads to build their information technology skills so that they could communicate online with their villagers.

“All village heads must be knowledgeable about the Internet,” Marwan said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Agencies have not used existing shared services to their full capacity, resulting in wasteful expenditure.

The Indonesian government will regulate to push all ministries and agencies next year to use shared services, the Ministry of Bureaucratic Reform has exclusively told FutureGov.

The government is working on regulations to “push every single ministry and agency to use … [a] single system”, Rini Widyantini, Deputy Minister for Institutional Affairs told FutureGov.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) intends to streamline the process of procuring goods and services for the government in the future, Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjojanto stated on Thursday after meeting President Jokowi at the Presidential Palace.

"President Jokowi has instructed Chairman of the Board of Procurement of Government Goods and Services (LKPP) Agus Rahardjo to design a system, which will improve the process of procuring goods and services," Andi stated.

Indonesian government is planning to ultimately use information technology to run its government by adopting the e-government system used in South Korea, a senior official said on Thursday.

"E-government is the answer to modern governing system, using an integrated information technology system," State Apparatus and Bureaucracy Empowerment Minister Yuddy Chrisnadi said on the sidelines of a forum to heed an MoU on e-government and bureaucracy reform cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea held here.
