Chongqing, a traditional industrial powerhouse, is building itself into a smarter city through digital innovation, industry insiders and experts said during the fourth Smart China Expo on Monday.

With the theme of "smart city", the three-day tech event this year attracted 557 companies and organizations from 19 countries and regions.

A platform that displays newfound technologies, the expo has a venue spreading across 90,000 square meters displaying over 1,560 application scenarios in more than 30 areas including intelligent manufacturing, smart transportation and smart communities. Glasses-free 3D, virtual reality and extended reality technologies are also displayed at the expo.

After introducing China's first fully automated bus service in November last year, Yongchuan district in Chongqing is steering toward becoming more than just a regional powerhouse for autonomous driving in western China.

Recently, 14 autonomous driving taxis, also known as robotaxis, were put into commercial operation at the Western China Autonomous Driving Open Test Base-an area covering 85 square kilometers with 220 km of roads.

China is helping Africa materialize its blueprint for an integrated and inclusive African digital economy and society

Throughout the past decade, digitalization has been highlighted as a dynamic force to drive productivity development, improve social product distribution, generate new job opportunities, and increase information accessibility and connectivity among different individuals, peoples and countries in Africa.

China's accelerated efforts to establish a data property rights system and mechanism concerning the circulation, transaction and revenue distribution of data elements will enhance the value of data resources, ensure data security and provide a big boost to high-quality development of the digital economy, industry experts said.

Their comments came after President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed on Wednesday the need to ensure the efficient flow and use of data in order to empower the real economy, and speed up the construction of basic systems for data. Xi made the remarks while chairing the 26th meeting of the central committee for deepening overall reform.

Technological advances in 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and big data are driving rapid digital transformation within the transport industry.

In the Chinese city of Guangzhou, ZTE has partnered China Mobile, Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Bureau and more than 10 other organizations to develop innovative applications for the "Guangzhou 5G Smart Transportation City" project.
