The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emirates Airline to enhance cooperation through electronic links (E-licensing).

The initiative, the first of its kind in the aviation industry in the Middle East, came as part of the UAE efforts to move towards e-government.

Motorists can now pay traffic fines and get other traffic-related documentation transacted at any traffic department in the country regardless of the licence-issuing Emirate. In this respect, a pilot project connecting all traffic departments in the seven emirates was launched yesterday.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, the director of the Department of Traffic and Patrols in Abu Dhabi, Colonel Ghaith Hassan Al Za'abi, said that the electronic link had lent form to the directives of Minister of Interior Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan who had instructed traffic departments to unify their procedures and to work in unison by employing a unified electronic database.

In a ceremony held at its premises here on Friday, the United Nations honoured the Dubai Municipality for wining the 2006 public services award in the area of application of information technology and telecommunications in the government sector, e-government.

By winning the award, Dubai becomes the first Arab city to win the prestigious award.

Dubai eGovernment was one of the finalists at the 'Best Practices in Mobile & Wireless' Awards Program organized recently by Computerworld's Mobile & Wireless World in Orlando, Florida.

Dubai eGovernment was chosen as the finalist in the 'Managing Cellular Mobile Data' category which recognises best practices for building and managing PDA-based mobile networks designed to remain compatible with enterprise needs on a long-term basis.

The Abu Dhabi Systems & Information Committee (ADSIC) has awarded the first five projects valued at Dh21 million ($5.71 million) under its service optimisation program for the Government of Abu Dhabi.

Following the development of a service optimization and e-Government strategy and an implementation plan for Abu Dhabi Government, ADSIC has engaged vendors in the tendering process for the initial wave of projects. As a result of this tender process, the first five projects with a total value of about AED 21 million have been awarded and are being kicked off in the coming days.
