Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said various information and communication technology (ICT) programmes carried out by the Malaysian Association of Bumiputera ICT Industry and Entrepreneurs (NEF) have benefited entrepreneurs in the field.

He said more than 500 individuals and 1,288 small and medium enterprises were involved in the programmes that were carried out.

"It is my hope that programmes like these will continue to be carried out and expanded nationwide to enable more entrepreneurs and companies to benefit," he said in his speech at the opening of the NEF-Awani Award 2013 here last night.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin launched, earlier this week, a national policy document that outlines Malaysia’s strategy for cyber crisis mitigation and response.

The initiative comes as a response to growing cyber threats which could potentially dampen the government’s aspiration to drive Malaysia’s digital economy and be on par with advanced nations by 2020.

Muhyiddin emphasised the need for Malaysia’s Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) organisations to be fully protected so as to prevent any untoward effects in the economy, social services and national security.

The phrase, "education for all", can only be achieved if there is Internet access for everyone, said Minister of Communication and Multimedia Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Education is one of the most significant functions when it comes to Information Communications Technology (ICT), he said in his remarks as a panelist at the ITU Telecom World 2013 Dialogue Programme on Education Transformation: Importance of ICT in 21st Century Education, here Wednesday.

The country should leverage on the Telemedicine Blueprint 1997, an initiative by the government to employ the use of telehealth in the healthcare system, instead of looking at new facilities and systems to address the growing demand for healthcare services.

Malaysian Medical Association president Datuk Dr N.K.S. Tharmaseelan said the telehealth system could support hospitals in providing primary care and ensure a more efficient use of resources and facilities in an already-stretched public healthcare system.

ICT services and e-commerce will push goal of Digital Malaysia, says PM

THE government expects information and communications technology services and electronic-commerce (e-commerce) to be the largest contributors to Malaysia's digital economy, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The sectors, he added, would push the goal of digital economy initiative, Digital Malaysia, to contribute 17 per cent to the country's gross domestic product.
