Almeria is blazing a trail in urban transformation with its ambitious Almeria 2030 Strategic Plan, focusing on technology, sustainability, and innovation.
Mayor of Almeria, Maria del Mar Vazquez showcased the city’s strides at the Greencities & S-Moving Forum in Malaga, where more than 75 cities gathered to promote smarter, sustainable city models.
The Councilor for Territory, Maria Josep Ripoll, gave a press conference this Friday to talk about the actions of the Dénia City Council in terms of lighting. The objective of these is to ensure that the town becomes a "smart city", or intelligent city, based on the investment in more ecological lighting that can be controlled in real time, adjusting it to the needs of each moment.
To this end, a new 15-year contract has been established with the energy services company, SITELEC, which had already started working with the city council in March 2023. "It represents a saving on the energy bill for the municipal coffers of 558.599 euros ( in the previous year) and the modernization of public lighting," explained Ripoll, who highlighted that in this way the Sustainable Development Goals regarding CO2 emissions and light pollution of the 2030 urban agenda are also met.

In a significant achievement, Murcia has secured a position in the top 10 smart cities in Spain, securing the 110th position globally in the ‘Iese Cities in Motion 2024’ ranking.
The city’s commitment to the ‘Smart City’ initiative, as outlined in the strategic plan ‘Murcia Ciudad Inteligente,’ (Murcia Smart City) has propelled it to the forefront of technological and environmental innovation.
With a series of innovative technological projects centering on AI, real-time data analysis, and digitization of processes, Nacho Santillana Montal, CIO of the Catalan City Council in Spain, seeks to achieve the concept of smart city.
A holistic digital transformation of its services, comprised of many technological initiatives, earned Barcelona City Council a place as a finalist for Public Entity of the Year at the CIO 100 Awards Spain 2023 in December. And as its CIO, Nacho Santillana Montiel was the central figure of this distinction due to a series of innovative projects including integrating various emerging technologies into daily life at the City Council and for Catalan citizens.

Fuengirola Council is improving urban traffic with an intelligent traffic management system. This is a new initiative of the government team to turn Fuengirola into a “smart city” and combines traffic light control with a network of video cameras that use images processed through artificial intelligence to manage mobility in a more efficient way, in order to improve safety on Fuengirola’s road network.
“Everyone is already aware of the firm and resounding commitment that we are making at Fuengirola Town Hall to innovate services in order to offer greater well-being to our residents,” said the mayor Ana Mula.
