  • Singapore: $1b tech push to beef up services in public sector

    Budget plan includes revamping the government's website and upgrading the national broadband network

    Singapore will spend over $1 billion this year on technology to improve services in the public sector.

    A large chunk of the $1.14 billion budget, or $250 million, will go to the ultra-fast national broadband network, which will allow Internet connection speeds of up to 10 times faster than what is available now.

    A Unique Establishment Identifier (UEI) will be implemented for establishments in Singapore as part of a $2 billion masterplan to integrate e-government services in Singapore.

    Singapore will give all citizens, foreign residents and businesses an electronic mailbox to receive bills and other correspondence from the government, officials said Tuesday.

    Called "OneInbox," the service will be launched in 2012 in the high-tech city-state, which now has five million residents including a million foreigners who enjoy nearly universal computer access.

    The mailbox provides a centralised platform for the government to contact individuals and businesses. Messages can be automatically forwarded to a preferred personal email address.

    The country's success in driving the use of e-government services across the island-state has intensified the threat of cyber terrorism, specifically due to the increasing number of locals now accessing government services online.

    Speaking to members of the ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) conference held here Monday, Penny Low, chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Singapore's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, said e-government services such as the online business licensing services (OBLS) has benefited entrepreneurs by making it easier for them to set up shop in the island-state, and helping them to "save valuable time and resources".

  • Singapore: Exporting Public Service Infocomm Gets a Boost

    A new company has been set up to help export Singapore Public Service Infocomm solutions. Named IDA International Pte Ltd it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of IDA Singapore. It is set up to meet the increasing requests and interests from foreign governments to implement public service infocomm solutions, and will serve as the primary execution arm for collaborations with overseas public sector agencies.

    Some of the services offered by IDA International include national infocomm planning and e-Government consultancy. In doing so, it aims to create business opportunities for Singapore infocomm companies to export their expertise, products and solutions. The Singapore companies will also stand to gain a deeper and broader understanding of global Infocomm developments and developed skilled resources necessary for the ongoing development of Singapore's own capabilities.
