  • ‘Biometrics-based electronic voting possible in Pakistan’

    Electronic voting based on biometric identification of the voters is very much possible in Pakistan, as the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is fully capable of providing the required solutions to the election commission, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) Director Burhan Rasool said on Friday.

    He said the only thing required for this is the political will and consensus of all political parties and stakeholders. Rasool, who is also adviser in Center for Technology in Governance of the Information Technology University, Lahore, was presenting an overview of the various e-governance initiatives being taken by the provincial government in the recent past, in an interactive session at Institute of Policy Studies (IPS).

  • Minister asks ICT companies to boost presence in Pakistan

    Minister of State for IT & Telecom Anusha Rahman Thursday met Azerbaijan’s Minister for IT Ali Mammad Oglu Abbasov and Iran’s Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi on the sidelines of ITU Telecom World event in Budapest, Hungary.

    In her meeting with Abbasov, it was agreed that both countries will enhance cooperation and collaboration in the fields of ICTs as well as research and development. Anusha also met with high-level delegations from Turkey, ITU, World Bank and Cisco Corporation.

  • NADRA introduces Pakistan’s new biometric smart ID cards

    NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik announced Pakistan’s roll out of new smart ID cards last week.

    The announcement was made at the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Eighth Symposium and Exhibition on MRTDs, Biometrics and Security Standards in Montreal.

    The new cards are identified as Smart National Identity Card (SNIC), Smart National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (SNICOP) and Smart Pakistan Origin Card (SPOC).

  • Pakistan Government to establish Information Technology network in rural areas

    The Development of Information Technology (IT) network in rural areas is the top priority of government for ensuring easy access to scientific research and information for the growers, said the Minister for Information Technology and Telecom, Qamar uz Zaman.

    He said, 'The government would develop telecome network and establish PCO in undeserved areas to bring these areas at par with developed ones', Kaira said. He was addressing the concluding session of the one-day training workshop on 'Agriculture Decision Supports System (ADSS)' the indigenously created Data Mining tool. The workshop was organised by the Fast National University to apply emerging scientific system in agri-sector to enhance crop production with use of minimum output.

  • Pakistan to enter new era of ICT, says Anusha

    State Minister for Information Technology Anusha Rehman on Saturday said that Pakistan would enter into a new era of latest information and communication technology in next few months owing to sagacious policies of PML-N government.

    Addressing the 4th convocation of Virtual University (VU) at its main campus, Raiwind Road, she said the government attached great priority to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector especially the e-government system. The minister said the government had put in place all possible measures to accelerate the development of ICT sector in the country.

  • Pakistan’s first ever National Data Centre inaugurated in Islamabad

    National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) has inaugurated Pakistan’s first ever National Data Centre in Islamabad. The inauguration ceremony held in the capital was attended by Minister of IT Ms Anusha Rahman Khan, Chairman PTA Dr. Ismail Shah and various professionals from the IT industry of Pakistan.

    Pakistan is the first ever SAARC country to implement the e-governance model. After successfully converting over 6,000 files to e-government by the Ministry of Information Technology, the government last year decided to replicate this model in all ministries/divisions and attached departments.

  • PM Imran Khan launches ‘Digital Pakistan’ program

    Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday launched the ‘Digital Pakistan’ program, an initiative aimed at introducing the latest technologies for public welfare, ARY News reported.

    Addressing the inauguration ceremony held at PM Office in Islamabad, the premier said ‘Digital Pakistan’ campaign is a part of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s digitisation programme aimed at introducing the latest technologies for public welfare.

  • Socio-economic impact of 3G/4G technology on Pakistan

    The Government of Pakistan is going to auction 3G/4G spectrum on April 23, 2014. The 3G/4G will enhance the broadband proliferation in Pakistan. This service will generate revenue between Rs. 380 and Rs. 1180 up to 2020 for national exchequer of the country. By launching this service mobile users will migrate from text or voice based services to data driven services like video calling, live video streaming, e-education, e-banking, e-health, e-commerce and social media applications. The 3G/4G service will provide ubiquitous internet access to users through smart phones.

    NADRA says crash programme launched to make CNICs

    Pakistan has emerged as one of the few countries in the world where 96 percent of the adult population has been registered through the most secure biometric technology, introduced by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), the authority said on Friday.

    NADRA spokeswoman said that the registration level in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was 99.9 percent, followed by Punjab, 99 percent, Gilgit-Baltistan 89 percent, Sindh and FATA, 88 percent, and Balochistan, 76 percent, against the projected population.

  • Biometric smartcards to streamline pension disbursement in Pakistan

    Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has directed the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to issue biometric smart cards to pensioners, enabling them to withdraw pensions from banks and post offices.

    Zardari believes that pension disbursement through NADRA’s smart Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) will not only streamline the pension disbursement system but would also provide a great comfort to pensioners, as currently these pensioners have to queue for days before receiving payments. The President’s remarks came while chairing a briefing on pension disbursement through smart CNIC, attended by many ministers and senior officials early this week, Pakistan Today reported.

Wie der US-Technologiekonzern Motorola gestern auf der WiMAX World Europe-Konferenz in Wien mitteilte, wird der Hersteller die benötigte Hardware an die Wateen Telecom liefern. Zum Netzstart sollen ausreichend Kapazitäten für eine Million Nutzer bereit stehen. Schrittweise wird das Netz dann landesweit ausgebaut.

  • Broadband: taking Pakistan forward

    A World Bank study shows that in developing countries 10% growth in broadband access results in 1.4% growth in the GDP. In terms of employment, every 100 new broadband internet subscribers result in the creation of 80 new jobs. Clearly, broadband is a significant multiplier of progress and development for any country in today’s increasingly integrated national and global economies.

    The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reveals that the total broadband subscribers in Pakistan as of April 2014 were over 3.6 million. Of this, the major shares go to DSL subscribers at over 1.3 million, EvDO user base at over 1.7 million, WiMax users at over half a million and the rest of the one hundred thousand distributed amongst miscellaneous others.
