The announcement was made at the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Eighth Symposium and Exhibition on MRTDs, Biometrics and Security Standards in Montreal.
The new cards are identified as Smart National Identity Card (SNIC), Smart National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (SNICOP) and Smart Pakistan Origin Card (SPOC).
The Business Recorder reported the event had more than 500 participants from 100 countries, and that Malik said Pakistani smart ID cards are compliant with ICAO and ISO standards, and should be accepted in all major international airports as secondary ID.
The Smart NIC Card has 36 security features is claimed to be the most advanced identity document in the world.
“The introduction of smart card is aimed at improving security by making forgery more difficult,” Malik said. “Now, a forger must not only modify the data printed on the face and back of ID card but also that contained in the chip to ensure that the two sets of information match.”
Malik hopes it will restore the world’s confidence in Pakistani ID cards, and says that in the last four years, the government has spent about 200 billion rupees in “monetary benefits for transparency in humanitarian assistance and financial inclusion programs using smart IDs and biometric verification.”
The government also plans to establish new e-Government services with Nadra’s National Identity System (NIS), with the new smart cards enabling the government with a platform to get one step closer towards a welfare state providing a variety of products and services to its citizens.
