Transforming Government since 2001
Among the latest development in Brunei Darussalam's e-government initiative is the implementation of provision of online services by government agencies.

The e-payment project which is linked to a number of Ministries or government agencies have been identified and will be given priority. Apart from that, in 2 years time, starting this year, 27 thousand civil servants have been targeted to take part in training programmes as part of the efforts to further strengthen and expand the ICT capacity in the country's civil servants. The Deputy Permanent Secretary of I-T and e-Government at the Prime Minister's Office, Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yusof, as the Overall Government C-I-O explained the strategies that have been planned to realise the desire and target contained in the e-Government Strategic Plan 2009-2014.

The Infocommunication Technology (ICT) Education Strategic Blueprint (IESB) initiative will allow the Ministry of Education (MoE) to work on getting higher levels of literacy in students, making the ministry more efficient and maximising the support of teachers by improving their skills and confidence.

Also known as the e-Hijrah, the initiative enables the ministry to establish organisational structures for a more efficient and responsive ministry, said Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong.

The Brunei government should capitalise on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to reach out to the people in the country's drive to promote and develop e-government, a United Nations e-government expert said here yesterday.

Richard Kerby, the inter-regional adviser on e-Government and Knowledge Management for the e-Government branch of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, explained that getting on social networking platforms will help the government connect with the media-savvy masses, especially the younger generation.

This, he said, would work alongside maintaining existing national online portals, where e-services are provided.

E-Hijrah focuses on both the structural elements of ICT, such as devices and networks, and the essence of ICT which is to improve the quality of education from improving learning opportunities to making the Ministry more efficient. The Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong stressed the matter in his keynote address at the launch of the e-Hijrah initiative, this afternoon.

Brunei needs to focus on providing more e-Government services and improving the delivery of such services, which the Sultanate is lacking, said a United Nations (UN) inter-regional adviser on e-Government yesterday.

"Brunei's (online) portals have a lot of information listed on them but not a lot of e-Government services," said Richard Kerby of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

The UN expert had been facilitating a two-day workshop on the Measurement and Evaluation Tool for e-Government Readiness, or Meter in short, at the golf course-side Bunker Meeting Room of the Empire Hotel and Country Club in Jerudong.
