In this piece, David-Chyddy Eleke looks at the promise made by Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to give the state a smart city.

Part of Soludo’s campaign promise during the 2021 governorship election was to make Anambra State a ‘livable homeland’. This to the governor included a state that its indigenes will feel proud of, and one where no matter where in the world they are, they will be happy to come back home and live, without being in a hurry to leave.

Recently, Lagos State governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, unveiled a multipurpose residents’ smart card tagged “Lag ID” with a unique identification number for identification of every resident, irrespective of tribe, age or status.

The smart card is a one-stop access card to live in Lagos and the first of its kind in Africa. It serves as a replacement for all other cards issued by the state government for a more efficient access to government services and other personal benefits.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that the State is now closer to realizing its dream of becoming a smart city with the deployment of 5G technology in the state.

The Governor stated this on Thursday at the Lagos launch of the 5G network by MAFAB Communications (Mcom).

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has launched a call for proposals from the country’s academics with the aim of developing solutions in areas including smart cities as well as identity management and location tracking systems using the national identification number (NIN).

One of the areas of the research is the development of sensors which can be used for smart city applications such as traffic management systems, smart parking, smart grid, smart homes, smart institutions, smart public services, public safety and emergency response and smart network management.

With a national target of reaching 70% broadband usage by 2025, Nigeria has made great strides, with broadband usage increasing to 44.5% in July 2022.

According to Naveed Kashif, Head of the Southern Africa Market at Nokia, optical solutions that have the scale to allow for significant growth will enable the country to meet its aggressive connectivity targets.
