Ontario funds upgrade to Broadband Internet in Mineral Capital

The Town of Bancroft has received a major financial hand from the provincial government in the push to make the communication lines that much faster in the area. Under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs’ Rural Connections program, the Town of Bancroft will receive a grant of $152,967 that will go towards the expansion of broadband Internet throughout the greater Bancroft area.

Network set up for healthcare providers to share vital information

A new peer-to-peer network has been created across the province to assist health professionals who are learning to use the e-health technology.

The electronic health records need to be available everywhere from a clinic in a small northern community to a hospital in a major urban centre and everywhere in between.

The province downloading the costs of services to municipalities has been a contentious issue for years, but when it comes to downloading megabytes, rural areas will be able to do a lot more of it after an announcement by the province Friday to expand high-speed Internet access.

Through the Rural Connections Broadband program, the Ontario government is set to offer nearly $300,000 to expand South Glengarry's Internet access, increasing the area's high-speed coverage to 98 from 63 per cent. South Dundas and South Stormont are eligible for $77,677.

Those living in the rural areas surrounding Orillia will no longer have to wait on a slow dial-up connection to link them to the World Wide Web. Residents of Oro-Medonte, Severn and Ramara Townships will soon be zipping through the Internet like those in the city.

The County of Simcoe is eligible to receive up to $1 million in provincial funding to start local broadband infrastructure projects, through the Rural Connections Broadband program.

The Ontario government will spend $8.8 million this year to help install broadband Internet infrastructure in 15 rural communities.

The communities' applications were accepted this year under the provincial Rural Connections Broadband Program, which backs broadband access for rural and remote areas of southern Ontario now considered "under-serviced."
