  • UK: Government launches new IT strategy

Public sector bodies will have common designs for desktops as well as purchase software and services through the cloud

The government launched a radical overhaul of its IT strategy today which it says will save the public sector £3.2bn annually in IT costs.

The new initiative aims to facilitate greater sharing of resources across the public sector in the use of hardware and software where departments have traditionally taken a more siloed approach.

  • US: Future-Casting in Government: Developing a Vision

Nearly half of the adults in America carry a pocket-sized computer, also known as a smart phone, with apps that do everything from locating the closest Thai restaurant to overlaying 3D maps to see the view from a street corner as it appeared many years ago. The “app economy” has created a startup movement in San Francisco where the mayor has stood with developers announcing they are setting government data free for the betterment of society. One of Hollywood’s most popular stars will soon play the role of tech icon Steve Jobs, the late inventor of the iPhone produced by Apple, the world’s most valuable company. Twenty years ago all of this may have sounded like science fiction, but if you ask Intel futurist Brian David Johnson, planning a future based on new technologies requires a rich imagination.

  • US: HHS releases health IT strategic plan through 2015

The Health and Human Services Department has released its new strategic plan for health IT that projects a transformed health system by 2015.

The HHS said in the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan 2011-2015 released Sept. 12 that collection, sharing and analysis of health data on a broad basis will improve care and reduce costs.

  • US: Obama will E-Government straffen und mobilisieren

  • US: Texas Publishes New Strategic IT Plan

The Texas Department of Information Resources and state CTO Karen Robinson released the state’s new strategic IT plan this month. Although these types of documents are filled with their fair share of goals, organizational charts and project summaries, there are interesting tidbits to be found.

Here are a few excerpts and statistics that caught my eye. And browse the document yourself in the embedded player below.

  • USA: Obama's Government 2.0 Plans Moving Ahead

State Department official talks about the promise and challenges of bringing a culture of innovation to Washington.

After riding into Washington on a tech-savvy campaign, the Obama administration is trying to spread the same new-media focus across the government, even to some unlikely areas such as international diplomacy.

At a panel discussion this afternoon at Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank, a senior adviser at the State Department described the efforts underway to bring the agency into the Web 2.0 era.

  • VN: IT Master Plan approved

PM Nguyen Tan Dung just approved a Master Plan on information technology which aims to convert Vietnam into a top ten IT power by 2020.

The overall target of the plan emphasizes international standards for IT human resources and the key role played by the industry, especially software and digital content as well as services, in GDP growth and exports.

IT industry is expected to contribute around 8-10 per cent of the country’s GDP and its revenue growth to double or triple the GDP growth rate by 2020.

  • ZA: Department of Communications outlines future ICT plans

During the annual Budget Speech Vote made by South Africa’s Department of Communications, Deputy Minister Stella Ndabeni called on network operators to work together in order to build an effective infrastructure to deliver quality service.

“Network operators must be encouraged to share infrastructure which, I believe, will enable them to make savings and maximise broadband deployment to the home and business as well as reduce the cost to communicate,” she said.

  • ZA: ICT Policy Review latest

South Africa’s Department of Communications hosted an inter-departmental Stakeholder Workshop on ICT in Pretoria on 27 August as the second step in engaging South Africans as part of the ICT Policy Review Panel.

  • ZW: Towards a National E-Health Vision

The history of health care is marked by a number of key game changers that brought the triumph of health over infirmity.

The discovery of writing skills made it possible for man to remember disease and how to manage it.

Results of that 2 000-year-old discovery are the institutions of knowledge we see today that now form the pillar of present-day health care practice.
