  • NG: How youths can use ICT to support agric, rural development

    I observe as a lot of young people today make use of ICT tools and applications in their day to day activities. The question that comes to mind for me as an agriculturist is how this can be used to improve agriculture.

    It is no news that many young people only see white-collar jobs as being prestigious. But then, agriculture can provide decent and gainful work too, especially when ICT is applied to add value to the business. Young farmers are able to master ICT skills and tools, such as geographic information systems (GIS), to analyse and adjust farming practices to cope with prevailing climatic conditions, and ultimately increase profits.

    Development circles such as the World Bank, the United Nations Development Fund for Women believe that Information Communication Technology (ICT) symbolizes an exceptional enabling instrument when deployed and used properly. ICT represents a unique knowledge based social infrastructure which can be of great help for women to evade marginalization. Development cannot be achieved through ICT without taking gender issues into consideration, ICT can work as a novel opportunity to enhance women’s access to information and knowledge as women are the least educated and marginalized especially in developing countries.

    Information Technology (IT) has been promoted as an important tool in ensuring that marginalized groups, particularly women are included in the development of the global information society. The importance of danger mainstreaming in national and organizational information and communication technology (ICT) policies and strategies cannot be overstated.

  • NG: ICT to Be Included in Primary School Curricular

    President Goodluck Jonathan has inaugurated the presidential committee on broadband, directingthe ministry of education to incorporate Information and Communication Technology (ICT), into the National Education Curricular beginning from the primary school level.

    Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, he said this was necessary because the children should not be burdened with the disadvantage of starting late if they were to become global ICT leaders in future.

  • NG: ICT training centre opening late next year

    In what is being seen as a move to boost overall telecom and IT services in the country by training locals in the industry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that the NGN 51 billion ICT training institute in Lagos will be operation sometime during the last quarter of 2013.

    The announcement comes as local IT analysts and the NCC have urged companies to deploy more local workforce in the upper echelons of their management.

  • NG: INEC Trains 300 Staff on ICT in Yola

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said that it had commenced training of its senior officers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

    The INEC Residence Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, Mr Kasim Gaidam, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Yola.

    Gaidam said that the commission was currently sponsoring no fewer than 300 electoral and other senior officers for the ICT training at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola.

  • NG: Kaduna to train 300 civil servants in ICT

    The Kaduna State Government said on Monday that it would train 300 civil servants on basic computer skills to attain best practices in information technology.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Monday that the Permanent Secretary of the state Bureau of Establishment, Management Services and Training, Alhaji Adamu Kagarko, announced this at a three-day executive training workshop on ICT in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

  • NG: Kogi gov tasks civil servants on computer literacy

    Kogi State governor, Idris Wada, on Thursday, in Lokoja, charged civil servants in the state to be computer literate, in order to be able to perform their duties efficiently.

    Speaking during the presentation of a 32-seater bus to Kogi State Polytechnics by the management of Cyber Space Company, Wada called on civil servants in the state to try as much as possible to be computer literate, as the state would soon commence e-governance.

  • NG: Kwara To Train 300 Youths On ICT And Mobile Money

    The Kwara State Government yesterday flagged off a five-day training exercise on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and mobile money for 300 selected youth drawn from across the three senatorial districts of the state.

    The empowerment training which is holding at the Computer Based Test (CBT) of the University of Ilorin was a product of tripartite arrangement between the Kwara State Government, and Stanbic IBTC bank.

    Speaking earlier during the official flag-off of the training held at the University of Ilorin Main Auditorium, the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed described the exercise as part of pragmatic approach to further empower army of youths in the state using ICT as a platform.

  • NG: Lagos to mark International Girls in ICT Day

    The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Professor Cleopas Angaye, has urged ICT stakeholders to support the campaign to involve girls in the ICT profession.

    Prof. Angaye made the statement ahead of the forthcoming International Girls in ICT Day event being organized by eBusiness Life Communications on April 26, 2012 in Lagos.

    He committed to be part of this event with the theme: ‘Why leave ICT to Boys. Girls can do ICT too’.

  • NG: Lawmaker empowers over 700 youths on ICT

    Over 700 youths have begun training in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training programmme organised by the Ikeoha Foundation, a non-governmental organisation based in Enugu, the Enugu State capital.

    Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the ICT programme at the weekend, the chairman of the Ike Foundation, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said the foundation had taken up the laudable initiative to help transform the society from social exclusion to an all-inclusive society that would guarantee a level playing ground to all.

    Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson has called on federal and state minis­tries, departments, local government, as well as the private sector, to support women and girls to take up career in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

    Speaking in her office on the cele­bration of the 2012 World Telecommu­nication and Information Society Day, the minister said such support could be through scholarship schemes, special competitions in ICT amongst girls and women and employment opportunities to help empower them to live better lives and reduce poverty.

  • NG: Ministry to engage youths on digital skills amid COVID-19 lockdown

    The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has launched a slew of online training initiatives and programmes to engage the youth during the COVID-19 lockdown. Through its digital skills online training, its Youth Innovation Series, Webinars and E-Sports initiatives the Youth and Sports Ministry is delivering opportunities to the youth and Nigerians.

    The IBM, in partnership with the ministry, three weeks ago started the online digital skills training with over 7,000 youth participating with the chance to get IBM badges. The new addition is the Webinars set to start next week. It will be thrice weekly webinars to further increase online interaction and study in areas of interest to the youth.

    The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has revealed its plan to train 200 youths to build their capacities in various IT skills. This, the Agency said, is part of efforts to derive value from the era of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

    The training according to the Agency will center on computer administration, social media entrepreneurship and eCommerce fundamentals, networking fundamentals, introduction to emerging technologies, etc.

  • NG: Plateau To Train Assembly Members, Directors In ICT

    The Plateau government had concluded plans to train members of the state House of Assembly and directors in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Prof. Comfort Piwuna, said.

    The commissioner told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the Sunday in Jos that deputy directors would also receive training in the use of ICT.

    Piwuna said the training was to give the lawmakers and the directors the requisite knowledge to make them ICT-compliant.

    The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) says it is training Nigerian legislators on basic use of computers and the Internet to enhance the efficiency of the legislative arm of government in the country.

    NITDA's Director General, Prof Cleopas Angaye, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja last week, said the training would provide the lawmakers the necessary information on e-governance.
