  • OM: Ooredoo holds digital literacy programme

    Ooredoo Oman, a top telecom provider, has partnered with Al Roya Press and Publishing to launch a digital literacy programme which will empower more than 900 women with essential IT skills.

    Backed by Ooredoo’s team of technical experts, the initiative will include 30 training sessions in nine Wilayats to help nurture the digital lifestyle benefits provided by smartphones, e-government services, and other personal electronic devices.

    As part of their CSR programme, Ooredoo has partnered with Al Roya Press and Publishing to launch a digital literacy programme which will empower more than 900 women with essential Information Technology (IT) skills. Backed by Ooredoo’s team of technical experts, the initiative will include 30 training sessions in nine Wilayats to help nurture the digital lifestyle benefits provided by smartphones, e-government services, and other personal electronic devices.

    The training sessions will be organised in Barka, Al Mussanah, and Al Suwaiq from 10 to 14 December 2017, followed by seminars in Al Khaburah, Saham, Sohar, Shinas, Liwa, and Al Rustaq. Inspired by the company’s dedication to championing human growth, participants will learn how to leverage the full potential of the internet, discovering the benefits of smartphone technology, how to filter online content to protect children from spam and maximise the digital landscape for educational purposes. As well as involving members of the local community, graduates of the company’s incubator programmes will also participate to further their knowledge of the digital world and take their IT skills to the next level.

  • Oman plans to expand IT project

    A national information technology training project that aims to strengthen IT skills of government employees and has benefited nearly 45,000 people is set for a major expansion following an agreement concluded here by the Information Technology Authority (ITA).

    A second deal it signed seeks to promote the trust of citizens and businesses when utilising e-services. The Government IT Training and Certification (GITTC) project has trained 44,604 employees so far, certifying 32,139 of them.

  • Oman's ITA, IDA Singapore collaborate to strengthen education sector

    The Information Technology Authority (ITA) in Oman and Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore recently strengthened their collaboration in infocomm technology (ICT) for the education sector in Oman through a joint e-Education seminar, which was held alongside Comex 2013 ICT expo.

    The e-Education seminar was aimed at offering an information platform on how technology can support academic approaches and enrich the learning environment for students and teachers, a press release said.

    Österreich sieht sich mit einem bereits bestehenden und weiter verschärfenden Fachkräftemangel im IKT-Bereich konfrontiert. Mit diesem Szenario ist man zwar nicht allein. "Auch in Deutschland fehlen in den kommenden Jahren über 43.000 IT-Fachleute, davon 18.000 in der IKT-Branche selbst, wo bis zu 4.000 Stellen dauerhaft unbesetzt sind", betont Wilfried Seyruck, Vorsitzender des IT-Ausschuss beim Fachverband Unternehmensberatung und Informationstechnologie (UBIT) der Wirtschaftskammer Österreich. Mit der heute, Donnerstag, vorgestellten Kampagne "IT-Offensive 2020" will der UBIT einen Beitrag zur Problemlösung leisten. Weitblick bei der Berufswahl durch Jugendliche und umfassende bildungspolitische Anstrengungen sind gefordert, um langfristig eine internationale Spitzenposition im IKT-Bereich zu sichern.

  • Pacific Islanders In Korea For e-Government Skills

    A group of government officials from Pacific Island states have arrived in the Republic of Korea to take part in an intensive course on ways to transform government operations and improve public service delivery through the use of digital technologies.

    The course is centred on a two-week programme in Incheon and Seoul, where the 22 government officials from 13 Pacific Island countries will learn and exchange experiences and ideas with e-government experts.

  • PH: Miriam seeks free ICT college education

    Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago submitted a bill that aims to equip poor but deserving students free education in the field of information and communication technology (ICT).

    In celebration of the National ICT month this June, Santiago authored the proposed Magna Carta of Internet Freedom, which called on the public to support Senate Bill No. 2839, otherwise known as the Free ICT College Education Act.

    If approved, state colleges and universities shall be tasked to develop two-year ICT courses.

  • PH: ‘Digital transformation in public education a necessity’

    The private sector should take a more proactive role in driving the digital transformation in public schools through the Department of Education (DepEd)’s Adopt-a-School Program, according to think tank Stratbase Institute.

    “The digital transformation of our public schools is no longer an option but an urgent necessity. Modernizing our ICT infrastructure, ensuring reliable broadband connectivity, and equipping our teachers with digital skills are foundational steps to elevate our students’ learning competencies,” Victor Andres Manhit, president of the Stratbase Institute, said.

  • PH: ICT's role in education underscored

    Education Secretary Armin Luistro underscored the importance of investing in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to achieve quality education.

    “The use of ICT for education requires significant investment,” Luistro said during the opening of two-day Second Asia-Pacific Ministerial Forum on ICT Education (AMFIE). “It is heartening to note that many of the ICT companies focus assistance on education. But far from simply corporate philanthropy, inputs focused on education are social investments Friday for an enlightened and vibrant client base in the future.”

  • PH: Senator Gatchalian eyes digital transformation in schools to strengthen distance learning

    Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian is pushing for the digital transformation of the basic education sector to provide for the proper implementation of remote learning amid the extreme summer heat.

    “Kailangang paghandaan natin ang posibleng mas mainit pang panahon sa mga susunod na taon lalo na’t patuloy ang climate change at global warming,” Gatchalian said in a statement on Sunday, April 14.

    (We need to prepare for possibly even hotter weather in the coming years, especially as climate change and global warming continue.)

  • PH: Training program seeks to raise 15% success rate in gov’t IT projects

    To increase the success rate of IT projects in the public sector, which currently stands at 15 percent in the Philippines and countries around the world, the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) has partnered with an agency of the United Nations (UN) for the IT training of officials in the government.

    The initiative, dubbed “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders”, was launched on Thursday at the CICT office in Quezon City, with top executives from the United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Center for Information and Communications Technology for Development (UNAPCICT) attending the event.

  • Phase3 aims to boost ICT knowledge in Nigerian schools

    A4AI member Phase3 Telecom is piloting an e-Learning initiative, called 3CEi, in 10 Nigerian schools to improve ICT knowledge in the education sector. The company is providing the necessary software and digital hardware to schools as part of the initiative, which includes learning programs made into an audio-visual format in English and French.

    Following the pilot programs, Phase3 plans for this initiative to expand to the national level while providing support for rural development. The 3CEi e-Learning initiative was created in 2013 to help build a solid foundation for Nigerian students in ICT knowledge development at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

  • Philippine City unveils ICT Master Plan for 2012 - 2016

    The City Government of San Fernando, Pampanga has unveiled its ICT Master plan for 2012-2016 as part of its commitment to better streamline information sharing within the city government and to increase efficiency of its internal operations.

    The total budget for the master plan is Php50 million (USD 1.1 million) and will consist of several components such as Cloud adoption, implementation of a structured cabling system, and the implementation of a centralised Geographic Information System (GIS).

    The National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE) organised a hands-on training for e-office to top-up virtual training provided on the subject in conjunction with the National Information Technology Board (NITB).

    HEC staff was now able to benefit from a practical training with onsite instructors to answer questions and practically work through problems, respective employees were facing.

  • PK: Higher Education Commission to equip 600 govt colleges with broadband internet

    The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced its plans to provide broadband internet connectivity to 600 government colleges across the country, reported Propakistani.pk Currently, there are 183 higher education institutions throughout the country with broadband internet connectivity.

    After this plan is implemented, students in Pakistan will have access to the HEC maintained digital library and archives.

  • PK: Higher Education Commission, IT Ministry to work jointly for proliferation of ICT sector

    Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom will share each other’s expertise for proliferation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the country.

    It was agreed during the visit of high level delegation of Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom (MoIT&T) to HEC. HEC Executive Director Professor Dr Mukhtar Ahmed apprised the delegation about the working, functions and role of HEC for strengthening higher education sector in the country.

  • PK: IT ministry can’t afford IT experts

    The Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT) cannot afford to keep IT professionals on its payroll and has taken on schoolteachers and forest officials to manage its affairs. The ministry is also set to scrap over a dozen projects that have been suffering at the hands of ‘inter-departmental neglect’.

    There is a severe dearth of IT experts at the ministry and most of the staff there are administrative officers. Nearly 100 IT professionals who had been associated with the MoIT in the past were let go because the ministry could no longer afford to pay them.

    The government has earmarked over 5,020 million rupees for the Information Technology sector with emphasis on developing human resource.

    Over five thousand women from under developed areas will be equipped with computer skills under the Women Digital Empowerment Program during the next fiscal year.

    A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between British Council and Punjab Higher Education Department here on Tuesday to collaborate in attracting the world reputed educational institutions and ICT companies to invest in the proposed Knowledge Park to be established in Lahore.

    It is mutually understood and agreed by the Punjab government and the British Council that both organisations will work together for the promotion of higher education in Punjab. British Council will also help strengthen the idea of Knowledge Park, Lahore which will bring academia and industry together to work for education and economic growth. The proposed Knowledge Park covers an area of 852 acres and is located at close proximity of Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Lahore. The MoU was signed by Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan and Richard Weyers, Director Punjab, British Council.
