Transforming Government since 2001
A national information technology training project that aims to strengthen IT skills of government employees and has benefited nearly 45,000 people is set for a major expansion following an agreement concluded here by the Information Technology Authority (ITA).

A second deal it signed seeks to promote the trust of citizens and businesses when utilising e-services. The Government IT Training and Certification (GITTC) project has trained 44,604 employees so far, certifying 32,139 of them.

Under the new agreement, signed with Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organisation, an additional 30,000 government employees will receive training. Participants will be awarded a Cambridge IT Diploma upon completion of their training.

Falling under the umbrella of NITTA (National IT Training and Awareness), the GITTC project aims to provide internationally recognised digital literacy certification to all civil service employees.

“Adding another operator to the GITTC project will further help government entities to enhance the IT skills and abilities of government employees. It will benefit the employees so they can better provide e-services to the community,” Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, Chairman, ITA Board of Directors, said after inking the accord with Dr Talal Abu Ghazaleh on behalf of Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organisation which will provide the GITTC training at the Arab Omani Institute.

“We hope these projects will help further develop e-services in Oman and help to raise even greater awareness about information technology and its importance in society,” Sunaidy added. The second agreement was signed with Gemalto Company to set up a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). Hisham Surakhi, Director, Government Programmes for Gemalto Middle East, signed for the company. The PKI project agreement, Sunaidy said, would “help to instil confidence in e-transactions and e-services, so the public can complete their electronic transactions in a safe and secure manner”.

Scholarships criteria soon

MUSCAT — The eligibility criteria for applying for the newly-announced 1,000 higher education scholarships will be announced soon.

The scholarships — for Omani students to pursue Master and Ph. D degrees — were ordered by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Higher Education Ministry Under-secretary Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Sarmi said the scholarships would be distributed over the next five years, awarding 200 each year. “Registration for most of the scholarships can be done through the online service of the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC),” he added.
