  • OM: 70pc agencies lag in use of automation systems

    Around 70 per cent of government agencies lag in the use of automation systems pertaining to administration and internal processes within government agencies. This has a negative impact on the internal efficiency and effectiveness of the agency and subsequently the delivery and operation of services, said the eGovernment Transformation Readiness Report. It also says that such automation systems include archiving, correspondence, emails, client relationship management and internal resources management. In contrast, the results of the report show some success stories in automating internal processes such as activating the archive, correspondence and email systems in some agencies. The results indicate that 98 per cent of government agencies need to simplify and re-engineer procedures for some or all its services.

  • OM: Global recognition for e-Gov

    Oman’s rapid progress in the use of information communication technology is confirmed by the United Nations biannual e-Government Survey 2012. Oman is ranked 16th in the world on the UN e-Participation Index. The e-Participation index is indicative on how governments develop an environment in which citizens can be more active and supportive of their governments.

    There is also good improvement in terms of online citizen and business services indices, which show that the Omani Government and the Information Technology Authority (ITA) policies are yielding results. The ranking for e-Services this year is at 35 compared to its position of 55 in the 2010 Report.

  • OM: Impetus for e-Governance

    The Sultan Qaboos Award for excellence in e-Governance reflects the government’s keenness to develop a national strategy aimed at creating a Knowledge Society and establishing effective government-community-citizen infrastructure that provides better public services. The much-anticipated and prestigious prize, awarded in nine categories, highlights the vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said to improve government performance and reflects the interest in the government’s efforts to promote managerial skills, economy, service and education. A government that is excelling in e-Services is more productive and efficient, ultimately less costly, leaving more money to invest in education and economic development. Efficient and reliable e-Governance knits people together. It is an effective tool to empower citizens and make government more responsive.

  • OM: Sultanate gets an advanced position in e-government

    The Sultanate came 16th on the world level in the electronic participation criteria at the E-Government Survey published by the UN under the theme United Nations E-Government Survey 2012 E-Government for the People.

    The report pointed out to the growth made by the Sultanate in the field of e-government, as well as the successful policies adopted by the government in this field which helped the Sultanate to get this rank, 18 positions better compared to 2010. The Sultanate came sixth on the Arab level in the same report

  • OM: Sultanate ranks fifth

    Sultanate stood eighth in the rate of increase in GSM usage and 29th in the development of e-services

    The Sultanate stood fifth among the Arab countries on Networked Readiness Index (NRI) of the Global Information Technology Report 2012 issued by the World Economic Forum. The Sultanate was placed at 40 internationally among 142 countries included in the report.

    The NRI measures the propensity for countries to exploit the opportunities offered by information and communications technology (ICT).

  • Oman climbs to 84th in UN e-Govt survey

    Oman now ranks a much higher 84th in e-government with an e-Government readiness index of 0.4691 compared to what it was three years ago.

    According to the United Nations’ 2008 e-Government Readiness Report, ranking countries by e-government development, Oman has jumped 28 points up in this ranking to 84th position in 2008 from 112th in 2005.

  • Oman fares well in global IT performance

    Oman has fared well in the Global Information Technology Report for 2010-11, published by the World Economic Forum to evaluate countries’ performances in IT and related issues. The sultanate was placed 41st in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI), among 138 countries.

    The annual Global IT Report remains the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of information communications technologies (ICTs) on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.

    The NRI, featured in the report, ex-amines how prepared countries are to use ICT effectively across three component sub-indexes: the general business, regulatory, and infrastructure environment; the readiness of the three key stakeholder groups in a society: individuals, businesses, and governments to use and benefit ICT; and the actual usage of the latest ICTs available.

  • Oman gets high global ranking for embracing IT

    Oman has been placed 50th among 133 countries in the Global IT Report 2009-2010 just released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in recognition of its efforts at creating a sustainable knowledge society by embracing information and communications technology (ICT).

    The report notes that the sultanate has established a secure infrastructure and national IT training and capacity building base, and specifically mentions the launch of the official eGovernment Services Portal. Published for the ninth consecutive year and covering 133 countries worldwide and with over 100 indicators and detailed profiles of each of the countries featured, the Global IT Report is regarded as the most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.

  • Oman has moved up in global IT ranking

    The Sultanate has moved ahead in terms of the emphasis governments place on ICT's role in enhancing development process and future visions, it was reported in the Global Information Technology Report 2010-2011 released by the World Economic Forum and business school for the world in governments' adopting and implementing ICT advances for increased growth and development.

    With coverage of 138 economies worldwide, the report is the world's most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.

  • Oman is ranked 16th on UN eParticipation index

    Oman’s progress in the use of information communication technology has received global recognition with the United Nations biannual eGovernment Survey 2012 ranking the sultanate 16th in the world on the United Nations eParticipation Index.

    The index indicates how governments create an environment in which citizens can be more active and supportive of their governments.

    Oman also recorded good improvement in terms of online citizen and business services indices. The country’s ranking for eServices this year is at 35 compared to 55 in the 2010 Report.

  • Oman jumps 18 places in UN’s e-readiness survey

    The findings of the 2012 UN e-Government Readiness Survey for Gulf states have revealed that a majority of GCC members have improved their rankings, stated a press release. Oman made a jump to 64 from 82, while UAE rose to 28th in 2012 as compared to 49th in 2010, highlighting the focus, significance and resources being applied to the region’s e-Government agenda.

    The survey is carried out every two years and takes a look into how countries around the world are progressing towards achieving e-Government status. This year’s report illustrates that many countries have put in place e-Government initiatives including the acceleration of the adoption of ICT across the public sector in order to deliver more efficient, more transparent, more inclusive and more sustainable government to all citizens. Countries that lead the index have moved beyond basic e-services to integrated systems that link different institutions and departments offering a single point of contact to the public. This is where Gulf countries shine, the report said.

  • Oman ranks 5th in IT services

    The Sultanate of Oman maintained its position as 40th in the world according to the World Economic Forum's annual Global Information Technology Report 2013. The report examines 54 key indicators including individual, business and government usage, infrastructure, affordability, industry skills and the socio-economic impacts of information technology services.

    Oman ranks fifth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as the ICT industry continues to develop rapidly across the region, behind Qatar, the highest-ranked MENA country at 23rd, United Arab Emirates (25th), Bahrain (29th) and Saudi Arabia (31st). The report notes that: 'Gulf Co-operation Council states have sharply improved their overall performances and have continued their investments to make ICT one of the key national industries that attempt to diversify and transform their economies'. This is reflected in Oman's global ranking.

  • Oman ranks high in ‘IT readiness’

    Oman has retained its competitiveness position, ranking at number 40 in the world in technological readiness, according to the Global Information Technology Readiness Report 2014 (GITR) which showed that countries with a strong vision to develop their Information and Communications Technology (ICT) capacity have a dominant economic presence.

    The Sultanate continues to score high in government functions such as effectiveness of law-making bodies (12th) and the efficiency of the legal system (14th), clearly indicating that Oman's transition plans to become a knowledge-based society are making significant headway.

  • Omani Government Readiness Index rises 20 pts to rank 19th

    Complementing His Majesty's vision to create a sustainable knowledge society by embracing information technology communications (ICT) great strides have been made through the fulfillment of e.oman initiatives and projects.

    Through the establishment of secure infrastructure, national IT training and capacity building, the launch of the Official eGovernment Services Portal, in addition to standards frameworks, policies, and increased awareness, Oman has placed in the 50th position in the Global IT Report 2009-2010 among 133 countries, released 25 March 2010, by the World Economic Forum.

  • Österreich startet Internetoffensive

    Unter der Schirmherrschaft von Bundeskanzler Alfred Gusenbauer und Vizekanzler Wilhelm Molterer soll die Plattform "Internetoffensive Österreich" einen "nationalen Schulterschluss" darstellen, der Österreich endlich die längst geforderte IKT-Strategie bringen soll. Die Plattform stehe auch für die enge Zusammenarbeit aller Stakeholder der IKT aus Unternehmen, Interessensvertretungen, wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen und Organisationen. Gemeinsam will man unter Mitwirkung von Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Sozialpartnern und Interessensvertretungen bis zum Herbst die „Österreichische Internetdeklaration“ erarbeiten. Diese "übergreifende Willenserklärung" soll in der Folge als Basis für die IKT-Strategie der Bundesregierung für die nächsten Jahre dienen.

  • Österreichs Regierung geht beim Internet in die Offensive

    Die österreichische Bundesregierung hat ein weiteres Projekt mit dem Ziel gestartet, die Internetverbreitung zu erhöhen und Österreich in der Spitze internationaler IKT-Rankings zu etablieren. Die neue Internetoffensive Österreich wurde am heutigen Montag von Bundeskanzler Alfred Gusenbauer (SPÖ), Vizekanzler Wilhelm Molterer (ÖVP) und Vertretern aus IKT-Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft sowie von der Arbeiterkammer offiziell gestartet. Aufgabe der sechs thematischen Arbeitskreise ist es, bis Herbst eine "Internetdeklaration" auszuarbeiten. Diese soll dann die Basis für die IKT-Strategie der Bundesregierung für die nächsten Jahre bilden.

  • Over half of Brunei is not web savvy

    Brunei Darussalam's Internet users per100 people are recorded as 46%. This figure indicates that 54% of the population has still not used the Internet.

    This was revealed by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar Bin Hj Apong, Minister of Communications in a speech at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day celebration at the Sutera Hall of Rizqun international hotel, yesterday.

  • Pakistan 131th underdeveloped country of the world: report

    Despite allocation of Rs 25.88 billion by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Division for e-governance, Pakistan ranks 131 in the world with underdeveloped countries like Angola, Algeria, Kenya, Suriname, Namibia, Gabon, Antigua, Barbuda and Guyana ahead.

    According to a report released by the United Nations titled "United Nations Survey 2008; from e-Governance to Connected Governance", e-governance was best tool to check transparency, accountability, efficiency and effectiveness of any government.

  • PH ranked 98 out of 157 in ICT Dev't Index in 2012 - NSCB

    The Philippines ranked 98th out of 157 countries in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Development Index (IDI) for the year 2012 according to the report released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) last October 2013.

    The "Measuring the Information Society Report 2013" (MIS Report 2013) contains the IDI of 157 countries. IDI generally 'presents the level of ICT developments in countries over time. It is a standard tool that governments, researchers and the general public can use to measure the digital divide and compare ICT performance within and across countries.'

  • Philippines: Are we really I.T. prepared or are we not?

    SMS capital of the world? Social networking capital of the world? These are just some titles attributed to the Philippines in as far as technology is concerned. Almost every Filipinos has mobile phones, internet cafes all over, people carrying notebooks / netbooks in restaurants, malls, and practically anywhere. But does this really reflect the total readiness of the country in as as technology is concerned? The answer is NO.

    The Philippines slipped from its 81st ranking in 2008 to 85th spot in terms of network readiness in the latest Global Information Technology Report 2009 released by the World Economic Forum. Back in 2007, the Philippines was ranked 69th among all the economies surveyed.
