The Sultanate stood fifth among the Arab countries on Networked Readiness Index (NRI) of the Global Information Technology Report 2012 issued by the World Economic Forum. The Sultanate was placed at 40 internationally among 142 countries included in the report.
The NRI measures the propensity for countries to exploit the opportunities offered by information and communications technology (ICT).
The report showed an improvement in certain IT and telecommunications sectors in Oman as the Sultanate stood 34 internationally in infrastructure and regulation index, 45 internationally in application of modern technology in business management, whereas the Sultanate was ranked eighth in increased rate of GSM and 29 internationally in the index of the development of e-government services.
The report said that the Sultanate is in need of improving certain development indices in information and telecommunications, like GSM and Internet charges, mobile broad band services and individual use of information and telecommunications and their impact on basic services.
The report is an internationally-accredited one issued annually and compares the development of information and telecommunications sectors in different countries to the previous year.
The report also includes some sub-indices like rate of illiteracy among youth and rate of joining high school, quality of educational system, spread of fixed line telephones and mobile broad band services, access to Internet services, using of social networking and Internet for commercial purposes.
The NRI is a composite of three components: the environment for ICT, readiness of community’s key stakeholders to use ICT, and the usage of ICT.
