Transforming Government since 2001
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has revealed telehealth services are set to be rolled out to 100,000 people next year.

Up to 100,000 people will be able to use their broadband connection to access health services during 2013, according to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Speaking at an Age UK conference, the minister announced the launch of telehealth, in which electronic information and technology are used to help people independently manage their own wellbeing.

It is hoped this move will allow people with long-term conditions to take greater control over their care.

These patients see doctors and nurses more often than other people, with £7 of every £10 spent on the health budget going towards supporting them.

Moving forward, the government is aiming to extend health delivery via the internet to as many as three million people by 2017.

Research conducted on behalf of the Department of Health revealed a 20 per cent drop in emergency admissions could come about thanks to the introduction of telehealth.

Seven 'pathfinders', comprising NHS and local authority organisations, are set to agree contracts with industry suppliers before the service is rolled out next year.

"Technology can help people manage their condition at home," Mr Hunt explained.

"In a world where technology increasingly helps us manage our social and professional lives, it seems logical that it should also help people manage their health."
