Information, Communication Technology (ICT) minister Nelson Chamisa said his ministry has finished preparatory work for the country’s revolutionary ICT policy at provincial level, as the government seeks to craft a blueprint by year-end.

The government is in the process of crafting a revised information and communication technology policy framework. Zimbabwe first launched its national ICT Policy Framework in 2007, but the document was overtaken by developments in the fast-growing sector.

The ministry last month conducted consultative workshops on the review of the National ICT Policy framework in all provinces of Zimbabwe.

Chamisa said the revised information and communication technology policy framework seeks to give strategic direction for sustainable national development through the application of ICTs. The policy would see the enhancement of efficiency of central government through a platform called “e-governance”.

“ICT Policy is working well and we have concluded the consultation ground work,” said Chamisa. His ministry was working on another project on e-communication Information Kiosk in rural areas that would operate as one-stop shop.

“This one-stop shop will have all the ICT facilities under one roof, Internet, printers, phone and other ICT accessories,” said Chamisa.

He said the ministry was currently conducting nationwide consultations in rural areas.

The National ICT Policy is expected to provide for, among other things, the establishment of national information and communication technology authority, national information and communication technology converged regulator and e-government.

E-government agency will develop, promote and co-ordinate the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the government for the exchange of information and delivery of services.
