Greece is building Europe's largest and greenest smart city in an $8 billion project that's been more than a decade in the making.

Located on the site of a former Athens airport, Ellinikon is set to feature Greece's first skyscraper, a high-end mall, and a sports park.

With a team of international architects including Norman Foster, Kengo Kuma, and Bjarke Ingels, this is how construction is progressing on one of Europe’s most important urban regeneration projects.

Ellinikon is currently one of the largest European urban redevelopment projects underway on the coastal part of Athens. With an estimated budget of 8 billion euros, the ambitious project will bring back to life the obsolete site of the Athens International Airport, which operated from 1938 to 2001, before a new one was inaugurated for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Deep Diving Into The Ellinikon Development In Athens

The Ellinikon is making headlines as one of Europe’s largest urban regeneration projects currently underway in Athens, Greece. Rooted in the principles of a ’15-minute city,’ the €8 billion masterplan is spearheaded by LAMDA Development and offers a comprehensive 360-degree experience to its residents, tenants, guests, and employees. This transformation will revive the obsolete site of the Athens International Airport, which operated from 1938 until 2001, before the Marina was developed to host the Sailing Centre for Athens’ 2004 Summer Olympics.

After years of delay, Greece is again on the path of giving a futuristic makeover to an unused airport and turning it into the “largest smart city” in Europe.

The massive smart city project will be built on the former Ellinikon Airport site near Athens. Geographically, the defunct airport is located on the southern coast of Greece.

Athens Urban Transport Organisation has partnered to create a fare collection system that simplifies commuting and makes public transportation more accessible.

The Greek capital of Athens is rolling out multimodal, contactless payments to improve the public transport experience for both locals and tourists travelling in the city and the metropolitan area.
