The country’s four main political parties have welcomed government’s decision to release GH¢50 million for the biometric registration of voters for the 2012 general election.

The parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Convention People’s Party (CPP), all described it as a step in the right direction, especially when the implementation of the biometric registration would eliminate multiple registration and voting as well as deepen the country’s democratic culture.

Mr. Haruna Iddrissu, Minister of Communications, on Friday announced that government would from next year attempt to use mobile telephony to collate death and birth statistics across the country.

He said in Ghana there was no reliable and accurate information on births and deaths but since the number mobile phone users has increased, it would be possible to access how many people have given birth and how many have been lost in the course of planning by using one of the network.

Payment of salaries of some staff of the Comptroller and Accountant General’s Department using the e-zwich card has gone through successfully.

The pilot project, which covers the May salaries of staffs in the IT and Payroll department at the Head office, will eventually pave way for public sector workers to receive their salaries through e-zwich.

The General Manager in charge of Project and Business Development, Mr Archie Hesse explained that the payment of salaries onto the biometric smart card would introduce a lot of efficiency in public sector wage management.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Dr. Kwabena Duffour has stated that government has released funds to enable the Electoral Commission implement the new biometric voting register as the country looks to advance the cause of democracy through transparent, free and fair elections.

The minister made this revelation on the floor of parliament when he presented a supplementary budget to the House worth GH¢1,463,123,559.

As part of measures to address the many concerns expressed on the integrity of the government’s payroll on pensioners, a Biometric Registration of Ghana Pensioners (CAP 30) has been launched in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

The Biometric Registration is geared towards the collation of an accurate data on about 730,000 government CAP 30 pensioners and public sector employees on the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) pensioners’ payroll.

This is to help clean, update and eliminate all ghost names from the payroll of pensioners in the country.
