The Electoral Commission (EC) has said the just ended biometric registration pilot exercise was successful.

The nationwide exercise was piloted in some selected districts to enable the EC establish challenges that may arise during the major one in March.

The EC’s Public Relations Officer, Christian Owusu Parry, said the identified challenges will be addressed ahead of the major registration exercise next month.

Eleven Government Departments and Agencies are to commence the e-government project to better deliver improved services to the citizenry.

The beneficiary agencies included the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional integration, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Food and Drugs Board, Births and Death Registry, National Health Insurance Scheme, National Communication Authority, National Information Technology Agency, Passport Office, Minerals Commission and Registrar Generals Department.

Mr William Tevie, Director General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) announced this at the stakeholder consultative meeting on the implementation of the e-payment systems in Accra on Tuesday.

Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, Birem North District Chief Executive, has disclosed that the Assembly would be organizing an Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) training for persons with disabilities in the district.

She said the training was in connection with the Vice President John Dramani Mahama's initiative to support persons with disabilities to have knowledge in ICT since that was what was driving the world at present.

Ms Frimpong was speaking at a durbar organized to interact with persons with disabilities to know their problems and find out how best they can be helped.

A pilot biometric registration of eligible voters in some selected parts of the country commenced last Saturday, with officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) giving the trial exercise a pass mark.

The four-day operation is intended to guide the EC to identify shortcomings and make amends before the actual registration which is scheduled to take off towards the end of March.

The exercise, which ends tomorrow, is being carried out in two centres of each of the 10 regions of the country.

Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) is to conduct two pilot biometric registration exercises in Eastern Region (Province) between Feb 25 and 29 to test the various arrangements made for the main exercise.

The exercise will be conducted in one registration centre in an urban area and another in a rural area, says Eric Mensah-Bonsu, the Deputy Eastern Regional Director of the EC.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in this capital of eastern Region Monday, he said that for the urban area, the Nursing Training School Registration Centre in the New Juaben Municipality has been chosen, whilst the Akyem Abenase Presby Primary School Registration Centre in the Akyemmansa District had been selected for the rural area.
