The Minister of Education, Lee Ocran, says in order to help improve ICT education, his ministry would soon be donating laptops to all teachers across the country, to make them competitive in discharging their functions in a ICT knowledge society.

The Minister made the announcement when he spoke at the launch of the rlg Foundation on Monday, during which His Excellency Vice President John Dramani Mahama was the Guest of Honour.

Ghana’s Electoral Commission has projected that it will biometrically register 12 million eligible voters in 40 days, for the country’s upcoming elections scheduled for December 7, 2012, when the much debated registration exercise takes off on March 24, 2012.

Disclosing this Wednesday March 7, 2012 in Accra at a roundtable discussion organised by the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), stated; “We will be doing our registration in 40 days and we do not expect to go far beyond 12 million”.

The EC Chairman said the projection is based on figures so far received from the Statistical Service of Ghana on Ghana’s last census conducted in 2010.

The laptop in the biometric registration kit cannot be of much use for any Information and Communication and Technological (ICT) service apart from the bio-data collection because the laptop was designed specifically for bio-data collection.

Mr Kwasi Owusu Mintah, official of Superlock Technologies Limited, consultants to the Electoral Commission (EC) on the biometric kits, said at a workshop that all other capacities of the lap top had been blocked.

He was speaking at a workshop on the biometric registration exercise at Koforidua in the Eastern region organized by the EC in collaboration with the New Juaben Municipal Assembly for Assembly members and heads of department in the Municipality.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman, Electoral Commission of Ghana, has reiterated that Ghanaians incarcerated in the country’s prisons will be given an opportunity to vote in the upcoming general elections.

He said in view of that steps have been taken to ensure they take part in this month’s biometric registration that will take place across the country.

Answering a question on whether prisoners in Ghana would also be covered in the biometric register to vote during the country’s December general elections, after he had addressed a roundtable discussion held in Accra, Dr. Afari-Gyan said “Yes, the prisoners – we will register them and they will vote.”

The laying of fibre optic cable from Moleson Creek to Anna Regina will be inter-linked with the Georgetown to Lethem cable and will provide different wireless broadband technology service. E- Government Project Manager, Alexie Ramotar explained that the original design for the infrastructure was changed from Wimax to Long Term Evolution technology.

Ramotar noted that Chinese engineers are in the country conducting site location for the construction of towers to support LTE technology.
