Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said promotion of information technology is need of the hour for speedy development of the province.

Chairing a meeting of the Information Technology Board here on Monday, he said that use of information technology could help in capacity-building and improving performance of government departments for providing better facilities to the people. He issued instructions for setting up a special committee headed by the chief secretary to review and submit recommendations on implementation of the roadmap presented for the establishment of e-government in the province. The committee will submit its report within a month.

He said the project of setting up IT labs in more than 4,000 schools of the province had been completed in a record period and in a highly transparent manner with the help of international companies to provide IT education to the younger generation. He said the scope of this project would be extended to middle school level in future.

He appreciated the roadmap presented by the Information Technology Board chairman for the promotion of information technology and establishment of e-government and said that it could help achieve positive results. He said proposals should be presented in a month regarding establishment of e-government in Home, Education, Health, Agriculture, Livestock and Board of Revenue departments in the first phase. He said the use of information technology and establishment of e-government will not only check registration of fake FIRs but also bring about change in Thana culture and eliminate terrorism. He said Rs 6 billion had been allocated for the provision of free medicines in hospitals and the use of information technology will help collect data about the stock of medicines and their use. He directed the authorities concerned to set up a subcommittee for the promotion of information technology in the province. The chief minister said departments should work with devotion for establishment of e-government. He described the delay in Land Record Computerization Project as criminal negligence and said that no progress was made regarding implementation of this project under the tenure of the previous government despite utilization of huge resources. He said Punjab government had devised a comprehensive strategy to complete this project by 2012.

Earlier, the Punjab Information Technology Board chairman presented the roadmap regarding the establishment of e-government.
