Transforming Government since 2001

The launch of the first ‘Smart Pole’ project at Kuching Waterfront marks a proactive step by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) towards realising the vision of transforming Kuching into a smart city.

In pointing this out, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunications Sarawak Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi hails the project, which reached completion on Nov 18 this year, as a part of a smart-technology effort aimed at enhancing the efficiency of urban services.

“The project involves the installation of five high-tech ‘Smart Poles’ featuring energy-efficient LED lighting, digital signage, security cameras, public Wi-Fi support, and weather-resistant designs adorned with Sarawak’s cultural motifs.

“Each Smart Pole is equipped with cutting-edge technology that not only enhances safety, comfort and convenience, but also reflects the state’s rich cultural diversity,” he said in a press conference at the Go-Down Mini Amphitheatre of Kuching Waterfront, last Saturday.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the DBKU said the project kicked off on Aug 19, with the works being funded under a special allocation of RM200,000 from the federal Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).

“The ‘Smart City Early Adopter Award’ received by DBKU in 2023 was a key driver for this initiative, further recognising the ongoing efforts in advancing the smart city concept.

“This project is anticipated to not only attract more tourists to Kuching Waterfront, but also to strengthen the city’s position as one of Sarawak’s premier tourist destinations,” said DBKU.

It added: “The integration of modern technology with traditional cultural elements makes the Smart Pole a symbol of Kuching’s transformation towards a progressive and resilient future.

“Moreover, this initiative supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations including SDG 7–Affordable and Clean Energy; SDG 11–Sustainable Communities; and SDG 13–Climate Action Through Reduced Carbon Emissions.

“This project also aligns with Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy, which emphasises the incorporation of smart technologies in infrastructure development.”

Also present at the event were Kuching North Datuk Bandar Dato Hilmy Othman, and DBKU director Salwa Pauzi.
