Malaysian operator CelcomDigi has struck a deal with property developer I-Berhad to accelerate digital development of its ‘i-City’ smart city project, starting with lots of fibre.
CelcomDigi says it will collaborate with I-Berhad to deploy its fibre-to-the-room (FTTR) service in i-City, delivering broadband speeds up to 1 Gbps to any room in i-City homes. The operator will offer the service at exclusive promotional prices for i-City residents, provided they’re already existing Celcom or Digi postpaid customers.
“We will offer convergence solutions for all their Internet and lifestyle needs such as home entertainment, gaming, smart home Internet of Things applications and many more,” said CelcomDigi CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi in a statement.
I-Berhad chairman Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong added that the collaboration “will open up a world of possibilities to residents of Shah Alam”, especially as 5G becomes more widely deployed across Malaysia.
“The launch of 5G in Malaysia will see inspire a wider application of internet-of-things. Now the potential to transform lives by connecting and empowering everyday objects and devices to enhance convenience, efficiency, and safety through data-driven automation and control becomes greater,” he said. “As such, there is so much added value for residents with the integration of affordable ultra-fast internet connectivity at home and the convergence of 5G on mobile phones”.
Lim also said the CelcomDigi tie-up Lim also paves the way for i-City to launch a new attraction, “a 5-dimensional edutainment facility, applying the latest immersive technology.”
i-City – which bills itself as “Malaysia’s No.1 Technology City” – is an urban development project in Shah Alam, Selangor, designed as a fully integrated intelligent city with corporate, leisure and residential components. It’s been in development since 2009, and aims to be completed by 2025.
