Parti Bersatu Sabah Api-Api Information Chief Yee Tsai Yiew called on the local authorities to digitalise their parking system, an upgrade from the current traditional scratch-and-display method.

She said the current parking coupons system is causing widespread frustration among motorists, who wanted a timely solution.

She described the present system as not user-friendly, with many motorists facing difficulties obtaining parking coupons and being unsure which coupon to use.

“Besides that, the physical nature of the coupons often results in them getting dirty and unattractive,” she said in a statement, Wednesday.

Yee said digitalising the parking system would be in line with the Government’s aspiration to turn Kota Kinabalu into a green and smart city.

“We would need the development of a comprehensive parking application that could serve motorists in the city. The proposed application would provide parking locations, enable payment and time recording as well as facilitate tracking for the convenience of its users,” she said.

Yee also urged the local authorities to study the e-Kupon system implemented by the Selangor Government via the Smart Parking System in 2022.

The system proved to be successful and led to a reduction of paper usage by 900 tonnes, leading to additional cost savings and most importantly, an environmentally and user-friendly solution.

She said by aligning with technology and sustainable practices, the city could create a parking system that complements the dwellers evolving lifestyles and respects the environment.
