The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated demand for cloud technologies as the private and public sectors rushed to update the delivery of urgent services and ensure continuity.

A Gartner report suggests cloud spending will exceed $10 billion in Australia this year. But the government’s cloud security guidelines need to go further in overcoming barriers and drive further uptake of cloud technologies. Advancing our digital economy is a central focus of the 2021-22 federal budget, so the government has a huge opportunity to demystify cloud services.

When Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a $1.2 billion investment in Australia’s digital future in the May 2021 Federal Budget, it was a clear signal that while the Covid-19 pandemic may have triggered a serious acceleration in the pace of transformation, his government has no intention of curbing its speed any time soon.

“We must keep our foot on the digital accelerator to secure our economic recovery from Covid-19,” said Mr Morrison.

The platform allows data to be presented in an easy to use and view format, making it more accessible for the community and businesses to conduct research, make evidence-based decisions, create new localised business strategies or gain knowledge and understanding of social, economic, and environmental trends.

The government has published an exposure draft of its long-awaited bill for the expansion of the country’s federated digital identity system to state and territory governments and the private sector.

The exposure draft, which is open for feedback until October 27, follows two previous rounds of public consultation over the last 12 months comes as the government prepares to introduce the legislation into parliament.
