All public servants in both the national and county governments will be registered through the biometric system starting Monday.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru said the exercise would help determine the actual number of public servants.

"This will also be used to cleanse the payroll at both levels of government, hence bring a stop to the issue of ghost workers," said Waiguru in a statement.

The biometric registration of public servants in both national and county governments is scheduled to kick off on Monday as the government starts an audit process to rid the public sector of 'ghost workers'.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will officially kick-start the Capacity Assessment and Rationalization of the Public Service (CARPS) Programme alongside Deputy President William Ruto at their respective offices while Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will launch the exercise at his City Hall offices.

The Ministry of ICT is about to expand Kenya's fibre Optic Coverage with an additional 1,600KM of National Optic Fibre Broadband Infrastructure (NOFBI) phase 2 being embarked on in July.

Already, 4,300KM fibre optic cable has been laid out since 2009. In the second phase all 47 County Governments are earmarked for connection.

NOFBI Phase 2 is funded through USD72.5 million loan from EXIM Bank of China, through a concessional Government to Government loan agreement and M/S Huawei Technologies of China is the project contractor, delivering from a tried-and-tested business model.

Safaricom, in partnership with Strathmore University is running two centres of excellence for Telecommunication, Innovation and Development in the faculty of Information Technology at Strathmore University.

The first centre, aptly named “@iLabAfrica”, is a Centre of Excellence in ICT Innovation and Development that was officially launched this week. It was established to address the Millennium Development Goals and to contribute toward Kenya’s Vision 2030. It is an independent entity in the Faculty of Information Technology at Strathmore University.

The role of chief information officers (CIOs) needs to be recognised as pivotal to the collective economic growth of a country such as Kenya, according to Victor Kyalo, acting chief executive officer (CEO) of the Kenya ICT Authority.
