The Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. John Odey, said Nigeria has made "tremendous progress" in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

A statement by the ministry in Abuja, quoted the minister as saying that Nigeria's achievements had been acknowledged globally.

According to the statement, the minister spoke at a radio communication conference in Geneva.

Efforts by the present administration to promote e-payment and rural telephony nationwide have started yielding the expected results as no fewer than 1000 ATMs and 5,000 e- booths are to be installed across the country in an arrangement involving the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, and the Chams Consortium.

Confirming the Public and Private partnership between NITDA and Chams Consortium, Prof. Cleopas Angaye , the NITDA Director General told Vanguard Computers &e-Business in a telephone interview on Monday said that the Memorandum of Understanding, (MoU) has already been signed last week between NITDA and Chams Consortium for the implementation of the capacity building initiative which is under the Millennium Development Goals framework for more internet access and computer awareness among Nigerians.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) plans to make effective use of information technology with the introduction of online registration.

It is scheduled to take off in eight pilot states, Lagos, FCT, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Kogi and Niger with the forthcoming orientation in Federal Capital Teritorry and Nassarawa State in preparation for its full implementation for the 2008 batch nationwide.

The Federal Government through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has initiated a tripod approach to developing information technology in the country.

This effort, according to Cleopas Angaye, director general, NITDA, is geared at refocusing the sector to drive the nation’s economy through implementation of the IT policy passed in April 2007.

The approach which is currently under implementation is geared towards human capacity development, infrastructure capacity building and institutional capacity building.

The Federal Government yesterday kicked-off an e-readiness capacity building project for staff of the National Youths Service Corp (NYSC), as part of efforts aimed at transforming operations of the 34-year-old graduate youth programme.

The e-NYSC programme, is aimed at computerising NYSC operations and bringing it into the information super-highway to ease registration and inspection processes of the scheme.
