Nigeria had in the recent past recorded a phenomenal growth in its telecoms sector due largely to the unprecedented upsurge in demand for wireless services delivered on the platform of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). The major impetus that propelled that growth was the government's deregulation of the telecom industry spearheaded by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as well as the keen participation of both domestic and foreign telecom firms supported by local and foreign direct funds in what was tagged "the fastest emerging telecom market in the world".

The United Nations (UN) has endorsed the Nigerian model of electronic governance (e-governance) as a viable option for successful deployment of e-government across the world.

The endorsement was given at the UN-organised International Conference for Electronic Governance (ICEGOV2007) held in China at the weekend.

The House of Representatives has placed a ban on the manufacture and importation of analogue electronics in the country to promote the use of digital equipment in the country before the year 2012 deadline.

Dino Melaye, Chairman House Committee on Information and National Orientation said yesterday at a press conference that the committee had turned down an importation of analogue electronic equipments by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), saying that the importation contravenes the government's policy of digitalisation of electronics.

"Digital equipment enhances e-governance because it is easier to transmit information through digital methods thereby making Nigeria part of the global village. A typical example of such is the intra-net and internet facilities", he added.

The Yobe State Government has put in place the vehicle to actualise its' philosophy of transforming the state into a human capacity focused and technology driven economy.

Governor Mamman Bello of Yobe State commissioned in Damaturu, the state capital, at the weekend, the state's Integrated Wireless Telephone and Internet Access project which is based on the cutting edge 'World Interoperability for Microwave Access' (WiMAX) technology. Yobe State is reportedly the first government or business organs to deploy WiMAX technology in Nigeria.
