Transforming Government since 2001
The medical world in southern Ontario is really moving into the computer age.

Despite problems that arose as eHealth Ontario tried to set up a provincewide system, medical officials such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists in Waterloo Region, Wellington County and Hamilton are now able to help their patients by sharing information through a computer network. Called ClinicalConnect, the network is a secure online portal.

The program started at the Hamilton local health network and expanded to include the Niagara-Haldimand-Brant area and Waterloo-Wellington. At present, 2,500 health care providers and 28 hospitals are able to use it.

Ontario’s fast-growing telemedicine network is getting help from its neighbors to the south.

Next month, the Ontario Telemedicine Network, which links roughly 3,000 healthcare professionals at 1,200 hospitals and medical clinics throughout the Canadian province with 2,200 videoconferencing stations, will make it possible for physicians and other caregivers to participate from their PCs. The go-live, involving 50 health professionals, will use software provided by Vidyo, based in Hackensack, N.J.

The goal, officials say, is to link healthcare providers and remote patients through their own computers.

EHealth Ontario has announced a $5 million investment to expand the reach of ClinicalConnect, a secure online portal providing access to electronic health care records.

The funding will accelerate the use of Electronic Health Records to improve patient care. It will also allow the province to leverage existing systems and investments to promote regional integration. eHealth Ontario wants to build EHRs for all of Ontario by 2015.

eHealth Ontario invests $5M in ClinicalConnect

Waterloo - More people across the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant and Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Networks now have access to better quality and more efficient health care.

Thanks to a five million dollar investment from eHealth Ontario, ClinicalConnect is expanding to better serve more patients in the WW and HNHB LHINs. Now, more than 2,500 health care providers, such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists in both LHINs can exchange secure patient information much faster.

When Susan Barnard had a colonoscopy and was told a couple biopsies were being sent for testing, the worrying began.

Thankfully relief came just two days later when her family doctor called to tell her the results all came back clear.

“It certainly made my life a lot easier,” said the Hamilton woman.
