Jackson County employees are working hard to upgrade the county's Geographic Information System, and city officials around the county have been eagerly awaiting the results.

County Executive Katheryn Shields formed the county's GIS Department in February and ap pointed Steve Marsh as director. Marsh went immediately to work purchasing and setting up a new computerized GIS system that is compatible with other local governments. The data that will fill the system are currently being revamped. New aerial photography of the entire county has been in production since March and should be completed by Decem ber.

Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman has announced a new e-government resource designed to provide one-stop information about USDA commodities. The Commodity Food Network (CFN) provides a single-point-of-contact to all online federal resources and services related to the purchase and distribution of USDA commodities.

Utah, Washington, D.C., and Montgomery County, Md., have the best government Web sites in America, according to the Center for Digital Government, an international research and advisory institute on information technology (IT) in government and education.

The three jurisdictions captured first-place in the 2003 Best of the Web state, city and county government portal categories, respectively. More than 260 public-sector Web sites entered the contest. A panel of IT experts judged each entry based on its innovation, Web-based delivery of public services, efficiency, economy and functionality for improved citizen access.
