A collaborative created to give governments an alternative to proprietary software has received its first code contributions.

After a slow start, an effort to get governments to share software code got its first five contributions this month. Part of the Government Open Code Collaborative, the repository, fed voluntarily by a group of government agencies and academia working in the model of the open-source community, Wednesday welcomed its latest software posting: RSSonate.

FDA Industry Systems (FIS), a global extranet used for food facility registration and prior notice of shipments for U.S. imports created under the Bioterrorism Act, was one of five government projects to receive an Excellence.Gov award from the Industry Advisory Council (IAC). The awards program, now in its fifth year, recognizes initiatives that demonstrate best practices in federal eGovernment implementations.
