  • GH: EC records 12,000 to 15,000 double registration

    The Electoral Commission (EC) recorded between 12, 000 to 15,000 multiple registrations at the end of the biometric voter registration exercise, Mr. Safo Kantanka, Deputy Commissioner in-charge of Finance and Administration has said.

    He said the EC was still compiling the registration figures nationwide and also cross checking to find out areas of multiple registration and accidental multiple registrations.

    Mr. Safo Kantanka said this at the opening of a one-day workshop in Koforidua on Thursday, to educate political party executives on the in-built integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.

  • GH: EC spells out qualification criteria for biometric voter registration

    The Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday spelt out qualification criteria for participation in the biometric voter registration exercise, fixed tentatively for the first phase from March 24-April 2, across the country.

    Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, EC Chairman who spelt out the criteria in Accra said a prospective voter is required to provide their exact date of birth, their current residential address as well as their hometown address.

    The applicant is also required to show evidence of eligibility to register by providing a birth certificate, passport, baptismal card, a driver’s license or a national health insurance card, the national identity card or the existing voter’s identity card.

  • GH: EC to publish names of double registrants

    The Electoral Commission has said persons found to have inadvertently registered twice in the just ended biometric voter’s registration exercise will have one of their voter identity cards reclaimed and destroyed.

    According to the Electoral Commission, the names of the persons who registered more than once would be published in the dailies so they can come forward with the extra cards for the EC to determine why and how the double registration occurred.

    The Electoral Commission is expected to release the Biometric Voters Register today. The decision comes less than a month to the December elections.

    The EC promised to release the register to the parties today at an Inter Party Advisory Committee held last week.

  • GH: Eighteen cases of double registration detected in Effutu constituency - EC

    The Electoral Commission (EC) has detected eighteen cases of multiple registration in the Effutu constituency during the Biometric Registration Exercise.

    Mr. Anthony Oppong, Effutu Municipal Director of the Commission who made this known at the third Inter-Party Dialogue Committee in Winneba on Tuesday said the names of the offenders together with those from other parts of the country had been send to the Police headquarters for further action.

    He said a total of 47,014 people registered in the area during the just ended Biometric Registration Exercises against 43,000 in the previous register.

  • GH: Elections 2012: Electoral Commission To Allow Proxy Voting

    The Electoral Commission will allow proxy voting and transfer of votes during the 2012 general election which will be conducted with the Biometric Voters' Register.

    Prospective voters wishing to take advantage of the proxy and the transfer of votes from one polling station to another would, however, have to notify the EC 42 days before the polls instead of the current 21 days.

  • GH: Electoral Commission begins biometric registration

    The Acting Director of Public Affairs, Electoral Commission (EC), Christian Owusu Parry, has disclosed that the commission will start the biometric voter registration in March, 2012.

    The introduction of the biometric registration in 2012 elections, according to the commission, was to help check double registration and eliminate ghost names in the voters’ register.

    The EC would acquire the biometric voter equipment by February 2012, Parry Owusu said.

    Representatives of political parties and religious leaders in the Upper West Region have called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its position on the issue of biometric registration and verification.

    This is because they believe it was one major way of ensuring free, fair and transparent elections in 2012.

    The Electoral Commission (EC) has initiated moves for the possible use of a biometric voters register for the 2012 general election.

    To that end, the commission has called on the organizations that have the capacity to provide equipment for biometric registration to avail themselves of the opportunity.

    This is in the line with the EC’s arrangement to replace the existing voters register that was compiled in 2004.

  • GH: First E-Government Phase Complete

    Ghana has integrated 20 agencies into a one-stop administration service centre.

    Among these agencies are Ghana Post, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and Ghana Police Service (GPS).

    Huawei Technologies Limited handed the ultra modern state of the art service centre to the Ministry of Communications to facilitate the delivery of Government services to citizens under the e-Government programme.

  • GH: Focus ICT training on job creation – New Year School urges government

    The 65th Annual New Year School and Conference has ended with a call on government to concentrate on training the youth on how to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to create, subscribe and search for jobs online.

    “Information and Communication Technology capacity building programmes for the youth should be organised at the district levels…with emphasis on how to use ICT to create jobs, subscribe to jobs and search for jobs online,” a 12-point communiqué issued at the end of the conference said.

  • GH: Free Zones Board Launches New Website

    Ghana Free Zones Board (GFZB), in demonstrating commitment to provide quality services to its stakeholders both locally and internationally, has shifted from the traditional website to a dynamic web portal.

    In addition to the English Language, the website employs Chinese (both simplified and traditional), French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish as its medium of communication. This, according to the Board, would enable GFZB to reach out to customers and potential ones in more than one language.

  • GH: GeGov Project Comes Alive

    The GeGov Platform, a Public, Private Partnership Project to deliver a new electronic system for the Registrar-General’s Department (RGD) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), will start operating at pilot sites next month.

    GeGov is a partnership between the Ghana Community Network Services Ltd (GCNet) and the Government of Ghana to automate business registration and tax administration. The government is represented on the project supported and partly funded by the World Bank, by the Ministry of Communications, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Registrar-General’s Department (RGD) and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).

    GeGov, the Project to deliver a new electronic system for the Registrar-General's Department and the Ghana Revenue Authority, will soon go LIVE.

    GeGov is a Public Private Partnership between GCNet and Government of Ghana, specifically the Ministry of Communications, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Registrar-General's Department (RGD) and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), to automate Business Registration and Tax Administration. The project is supported and partly funded by the World Bank.

    GCNet has been mandated to design, finance, build, operate and transfer an eGovernment System including new applications for both the RGD and the GRA.

  • GH: GIFEC, NCA and NITA Boards inaugurated

    Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Communication on Friday inaugurated the Boards of three institutions under the Ministry of Communications.

    The institutions are the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) with the Minister as its Chairman, the National Communication Authority (NCA) with Mr. Eugene Baffoe Bonnie as Chairman and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), with Professor Nii Quaynor as Chairman.

  • GH: GNCCI begins automation of issuance of Certificate of Origin next week

    Mr Seth Adjei-Baah, President of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), on Friday called on the business community, especially producers to register their products with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) to take advantage of duty free entry into the West African Market.

    He said apart from other benefits, the ETLS would accelerate the pace of industrialisation in the sub-region and pledged the Chamber's commitment to assist enterprises with their applications to obtain ECOWAS status for their products.

    Mr Adjei-Baah was speaking at a press launch of the automation of the process of issuing certificate of origin to cover exports from Ghana.

    The Healthcare Federation of Ghana is urging Private health Sector Players (PSP) to take advantage of the current trend of technological advancement or risk being obsolete.

    According to the federation, the wave of digital transformation, which has revolutionized various industries, is now knocking on the doors of the health sector and is inevitable.

    In this regard, private health sector players are expected to adopt digital health practices which, involve the digitalization of business processes, enabling patients to exchange personal health data, and fostering data-driven decision-making.

  • GH: Gov’t advocates trade portal for Africa

    Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, the Minister of Trade and Industry, has advocated the establishment of a trade portal for the African continent.

    He said the portal would help in trade facilitation and improvement in bilateral trade relations.

    Dr Spio-Garbrah was speaking at the Swiss-Ghanaian Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Breakfast meeting on the theme: “Innovations in trade facilitation and e-government” in Accra.
