  • We first have to build this (smart) city

According to a new market research report by Meticulous Research "Smart Cities Market by Solutions (Smart Citizen Services, Smart Environment, Smart Buildings, Smart Transportation, Smart Utilities, Other Smart Solutions), Component (Hardware, Software, Services), Technology, and Geography – Global Forecast to 2030" the global smart cities market is projected to reach $3,107.05 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 25.8% from 2023 to 2030.

This is significant number and bodes well for a future where we will have cities that are intelligent, clean, sustainable and, importantly, provide a high quality of life to citizens. But as with each historic, potentially life altering movement, the building blocks must first be laid.

The answer, of course, is yes. But who, then, are the government’s customers? It is very easy to say the citizen, or the taxpayer, or Congress given their representational role in our democracy. And yet, these are the superficial answers that don’t get down to the level that is necessary to start positioning our systems to yield the business intelligence that will best serve “we the people,” the real customers of government.
  • ZA: Minister 'bad for business'

The business world is frustrated with the Communication Department's lack of governance, the Cape Chamber of Commerce said on Tuesday.

"It is creating a level of uncertainty," said Roderick Lim Banda, chairman of the chamber's information and communications technology (ICT) committee.

This also affected the confidence of business in the local ICT sector.

  • ZA: We're NOT bad for business!'

The communication department has denied being bad for business.

"No business people have ever raised concerns about uncertainty and business confidence," spokesman Siyabulela Qoza said on Wednesday.

The Cape Chamber of Commerce's information and communication technology (ICT) committee chairman, Roderick Lim Banda, said on Tuesday that business was becoming increasingly frustrated by a lack of governance and delivery in the department.
