Data protection law has been gaining ground in Africa over the past 20 years. Today, out of 54 countries, 25 have passed data protection laws, the latest countries being Uganda, Nigeria and Egypt. Other countries have introduced data protection bills which are under discussion or waiting to be on the legislative agenda.

An independent authority to manage and protect personal data has been proposed by a group of security experts in the UAE.

Experts at the second Annual Gulf Cooperation Council’s e-Participation and e-Governance Forum in the capital said the proposed authority must oversee the use of personal information online.

Canada’s government announced Thursday, Aug. 4, it will shut down more than 90 percent of its 300 data centers, leaving the nation with fewer than 20 when the plan is complete.

In addition, Canada’s government will make the move away from 100 different e-mail platforms to one all-encompassing system. Furthermore, all resources associated with the delivery of e-mail, data center and network services are being transferred from 44 departments and agencies to a new entity called Shared Services Canada.

The government agency that oversees the province's electronic health infrastructure, and increasingly the collection and sharing of sensitive patient information, would be unprepared if hit with a major security breach, the province's privacy watchdog has warned.

Smart Systems for Health Agency, or SSHA, says it has never experienced such a breach, but a comprehensive review of its privacy practices by Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner found there were "serious gaps" in the organization's ability to monitor electronic security lapses.

With measures to ensure privacy getting prioritized worldwide, many countries have framed relevant laws and regulations on personal information protection. China too released its draft Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), which just closed its seeking-opinion period on November 19, 2020.

The study also found that 60 percent of Hong Kong residents will publicly expose such failure and 39 percent will take legal action.

Similarly, certain data has tremendous commercial value and its leakage may adversely affect the business profits of organisations. For instance, take the example of the business process outsourcing industry that relies heavily upon data protection requirements. If crucial data like credit cards details is not protected by any law, the same would give rise to many sorts of crimes.
