The Beecham Research declared LoRaWAN the premier low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technology for smart cities. Titled Leveraging LoRaWAN for Smart Cities: Cost-Effective, Scalable, Sustainable Connectivity, the report emphasises LoRaWAN’s vital role in modern urban environments, showcasing its ability to provide cost-effective and efficient connectivity for various smart applications.

The LoRa Alliance, a global consortium promoting the open LoRaWAN standard, will highlight these findings at the Smart Cities Expo World Congress(SCEWC). Member companies, including Browan Communications, iotech, Miromico, and Tata Communications, will demonstrate how LoRaWAN is revolutionising urban infrastructure. ZENNER will join Tata Communications and the Alliance on the panel titled “IoT Connectivity & Data Insights to Enhance Urban Life.”

According to Alper Yegin, CEO of the LoRa Alliance, the soaring demand for smart city solutions stems from rapid urbanisation and the urgent need for sustainable development. “As cities grapple with challenges like pollution, traffic congestion, and waste management, IoT technologies driven by LoRaWAN can optimise resources and improve residents’ quality of life,” Yegin stated. The SCEWC will serve as a platform to illustrate the extensive capabilities of LoRaWAN in fostering urban innovation.

The report outlines key advantages of LoRaWAN, such as its long-range capabilities, low power consumption, and cost-effectiveness, making it ideal for cities looking to enhance infrastructure while managing expenses. Its versatility in supporting a wide array of devices and sensors is crucial for successful smart city initiatives.

Robin Duke-Woolley, CEO and chief analyst of Beecham Research, noted that as municipalities pursue digital transformation, LoRaWAN is becoming a cornerstone of smarter urban environments. “This report aims to equip city planners, technology providers, and policymakers with insights into the diverse applications of LoRaWAN globally. The potential is immense.”
