This week we showcase three examples that demonstrate the transformative role AI is playing in cities to improve daily life and long-term strategies.

Cities around the world are increasingly embedding artificial intelligence into their services and operations to improve urban life. From traffic management to urban planning, here are three ways from the last week we’ve seen AI coming to the fore in cities.

  1. Glasgow utilises AI to increase road safety

Kicking off in Scotland, Glasgow City Council has partnered with transport tech company VivaCity to deploy AI solutions aimed at improving traffic flow and road safety. Funded by the Glasgow City Region Deal, the initiative involves the installation of AI-powered sensors at two key intersections. These sensors enhance the detection of cyclists and vehicles, allowing traffic signals to respond dynamically to road conditions, making commuting safer for all users.

  2. Milton Keynes to stage AI festival

Staying in the UK, we learned this week that the city of Milton Keynes is set to host its own AI Festival from 28 October to 1 November 2024. The event will showcase the city’s growing role in the AI and tech ecosystem. The festival builds on momentum from last year’s AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park and aims to bring together technology experts, businesses, and creatives to explore AI innovations. The city council has said it sees this festival as a step toward strengthening its smart city and technology strategy.

  3. Bahrain uses satellite imagery to inform planning

Elsewhere, in Bahrain, AI is being combined with satellite imagery to transform urban planning. The Kingdom’s Survey and Land Registration Bureau (SLRB) has partnered with Planet Labs and Aetosky to integrate AI-driven change detection technology with high-resolution satellite data. The technology is said to help Bahrain make more informed decisions on land use and development, enhancing the country’s urban planning initiatives.

As these stories demonstrate, AI is playing a transformative role in urban services. With the democratisation of the technology making it more accessible, more cities are embracing innovation in AI to improve daily life and long-term development strategies.
