The mHealth Alliance (mHA) announced today a million-dollar grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to leverage mobile technologies to improve health in low and middle income countries. The announcement renews support from a mHealth Alliance Founding Partner, and follows on the heels of $2 million in new funding that the mHealth Alliance announced earlier this week.
Speaking at the mHealth Summit, Dr. Judith Rodin, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, said: “Innovations in mobile communications have unparalleled and perhaps limitless potential in overcoming persistent global health challenges. But, these innovations will only succeed if we create the networks and partnerships that allow us to bring them to scale and unlock their full potential. We are proud to have helped found the mHealth Alliance, and to announce a new $1 million commitment to support its continued leadership in mobilizing public/private partnerships aimed at delivering on the promise of mobile health.”
Rockefeller Foundation funding will support the core budget and activities of the mHA, including the Health UnBound (HUB) online community that facilitates global knowledge-sharing about the full range of mHealth issues, and the Alliance-led Maternal mHealth Initiative.
“Wireless is essential to delivering health to unserved and underserved communities,” said David Aylward, Executive Director of the mHealth Alliance. “Villages may not have running water or even electricity, but in most cases at least one person has access to a mobile phone; soon 90 percent of the world's population will be within the coverage of wireless networks. We are delighted to have this further investment from the Rockefeller Foundation to use the transformative power of mobile technology to improve health and wellbeing at the furthest reaches of wireless networks and devices.”
The Rockefeller Foundation, together with the United Nations Foundation and Vodafone Foundation, launched the mHealth Alliance. Since then, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the GSM Association and HP have joined as Founding Partners.
The 2010 mHealth Summit, the largest event of its kind, is bringing together leaders at the forefront of the policy, research, business and development communities, including Bill Gates, Aneesh Chopra, Ted Turner and Judith Rodin, to advance the discussion around ways mobile technology can increase the access, efficiency and effectiveness of health systems in both the developing and developed worlds. The mHealth Summit partners are the Foundation for the National Institutes for Health (NIH), the mHealth Alliance, and NIH.
